“One is never over-dressed or under-dressed with a little black dress.” — Karl Lagerfeld
The little black dress (LBD) has become a staple in every girl’s wardrobe, as it should be. In 1926, the LBD was popularized by Coco Chanel in a Vogue magazine issue, which claimed the dress would be “a sort of uniform for all women of taste,” and they were right. Chanel’s competitor, Jean Patou, also made designs for this essential item, Audrey Hepburn later proving that the LBD is an iconic look with the Givenchy dress she wore in the well-loved film, Breakfast at Tiffany’s.
If you don’t already have one (or five) hanging in your closet, here are a few reasons why you should think about investing in one:
Black has always been seen as a classy color. It’s nothing extravagant, yet you will definitely make a statement.
Pair it with a jean jacket and a cute belt for a day of shopping, or a classy shawl and a diamond necklace for an evening out.
You won’t have to worry about going out to buy a gold necklace when you only have silver because both pair well with a LBD. You could even try adding a few accessories in bold colors like red or blue for a look that stands out.
Long sleeves, short sleeves, no sleeves, pencil, round, a line. Whichever is your cup of tea, there will be a little black dress waiting for you to buy. Black is a slimming color and the LDB is perfect for any figure.
Worried that your red gown is too fancy? Pick your little black dress instead. Is that summer dress with flowers on it not dressy enough? Go for the LBD. Black is the safest color to wear for any occasion.
