MAC Cosmetics partnered with Selena to release an anticipated beauty collection – and Gomez was not involved.
The cosmetic collaboration honors Selena Quintanilla-Pérez, a Mexican-American singer and fashion icon of the ’80s and ’90s. The #WomanThatDid was an international sensation; she served as a positive role model for women everywhere, especially within the Latin community. Her songs switched between English and Spanish lyrics, which can be heard in famous hits “Dreaming of You” and “Como la Flor.” Through her music, she embraced diversity to beautifully blend American and Spanish cultures.
Although Selena was tragically murdered in 1995, MAC X Selena was inspired by the trend-setting legacy she left behind. Selena’s sister, Suzette Quintanilla, served as the mastermind behind the magic. Earlier this year, Suzette teamed up with MAC to create a makeup line with the true Selena in mind.
“I said it shouldn’t be about anything that I like, or what you guys [MAC Cosmetics] want to push,” Suzette told POPSUGAR. “I think since it’s for Selena, it needs to be about Selena. I still have her makeup case, so I literally took pictures of everything in it and sent it to MAC.”
From bold red lipsticks to deep plum eyeshadow, the star would certainly approve of the collection’s shades. The items are also aptly named after her hits, including the “Techno Cumbia” bronzer. Check out the full selection in the video by beauty guru Dolce Candy above.
