ENTITY reports on egg substitutes for baking.

Eggs play an integral part in many baked dishes and sometimes its really difficult to bake without them.

Finding the best egg substitutes for binding your baked products can be a little overwhelming, but not to worry, ENTITY has your back.

Whether it’s a food allergy or a dietary restriction, we totally get it. And don’t worry, because ENTITY found some really great tips that can ease the pain and you can still enjoy some of your favorite yummy baked dishes.

Here are five everyday ingredients you can use to substitute for eggs when baking.

1 Bananas

Mmm, my favorite. So this should be a tasty substitute, but also a sweeter one that probably isn’t the best option in a savory dish. Try it out by smashing 1/4 of a half of a banana instead of using one egg for a recipe. This recipe is great for pancakes and banana muffins.

It’s important to keep in mind that since eggs are used to bind the ingredients together and adds rise and moisture, these substitutes will not serve for that purpose. But you can add half of a teaspoon of baking powder for that affect.

2 Applesauce

Applesauce can be used as another substitute for eggs and for oil in baked dishes.

Typically you should use unsweetened applesauce, but if sweetened applesauce is all you have then we suggest to reduce the amount of sugar in the other ingredients to create balance in your baked dish.

Try using 1/2 unsweetened/sweetened applesauce along with 1/2 teaspoon of baking powder as your egg substitute.

3 Flax seeds

This is one of the most healthy and hearty substitute for eggs.

You can add one tablespoon of ground flaxseeds and add three tablespoons of water until fully absorbed. This is great for a recipe that requires only one egg.

4 Vegetable oil

Keep in mind that too much vegetable oil can make your dish very greasy, which isn’t ideal for baking. Stick to adding 1/4 cup of vegetable oil as a substitute for recipes that only require one egg.

5 Silken Tofu

One-fourth cup of pureed Silken tofu works great because it is a tasteless ingredient that adds a lot of richness to your dish. You should also mix a teaspoon of cornstarch to give it balance.

This substitute is great for cakes and brownies, but probably not the best for light baked goods such as angel food cake or fluffy pastries.

Here’s a fun fact for those of you who are concerned about missing out on protein: Flax seeds are a great source of protein and one tablespoon is equivalent to 1.9 grams of protein. Not bad, right?

You can also add plant-based protein to your baked goods if it is a huge concern with your diet and you want to incorporate more protein.

These substitutions will help solve all of your baking needs in no time, and still allow you to have the source of nutrients that you would be missing out on without the eggs. So don’t be afraid to experiment.

No eggs? No problem.
