I knew that when I moved from the east coast and to the west coast I was investing in my future.

Readability, keywords, researching these keywords, playing around with word choice, internal linking…I could go on forever. The academy took my journalism experience to the next level.

My journalistic background consisted of writing straight news, and the ENTITY Academy SEO Course expanded my thinking. I began to write creative “listicles” and hot takes about topics I care about. Regardless of what content I was writing, I knew I wanted my work to matter and be widely viewed. This is exactly what SEO is. I discovered the science behind getting your post on the front page of Google.

Whether you are selling something, buying, or just want your work viewed, finding something on the first page of Google is crucial. Becoming an SEO specialist throughout this program is a hard skill I will be able to bring to any job in the future.

The closest I had been to graphic design before the ENTITY Academy SEO Course was editing my Instagram pictures… After the past seven weeks, I am fairly confident in my Adobe skills — confident enough to market myself with experience in various Adobe programs. Coming from a public relations major, that’s huge.

Sure, I’ve learned the basics in school, but during graphic design week I was taught by professionals who guided me along the way. Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign and XD became second nature to me, and I was able to use what I had just learned to create GIFs, memes and graphics for ENTITY’s Facebook and Instagram page.

Not only did I feel the instant gratification of my rookie work being published, I was able to share it with my friends and family and prove to them I am actually working out here — not just taking cool Instagram pics.

Marketing.

Marketing is my minor in school, but I was excited to see how an established company implements their own marketing strategies. Especially a young company, like ENTITY.

Through the ENTITY Academy SEO Course, each internal mentor group created their own strategy which involved setting goals, determining a target market, researching demographics and developing various strategies to prioritize ticket sales for the Love Yourself Summit.

We learned about digital marketing and also took that marketing on foot to reach our audience. ENTITY’s Marketing Chair explained her role, and taught us how to create a marketing plan to present to our mentors.

Sure, I have taken classes and briefly studied these topics in school, but not like this. Seeing how each hard skill plays into growing a company was fascinating. At ENTITY Academy SEO Course I was always learning something new, and seeing how these skills would give me the upper hand in an interview.
