One ENTITY Academy mentee writes about her experience at the ENTITY Academy.

During my seven weeks as an ENTITY Academy mentee, I have learned so much more than I could have ever expected. As a journalist, there is always room for improvement.

The new hard skills I learned will definitely be instilled in me even after this program. Here is how ENTITY Academy gave me the tools I need to succeed.

SEO

At first, search engine optimization was a lot more difficult than I thought it would be. I didn’t realize the intricacies that come with publishing an article. It’s not just about hitting publish on a piece of written work. It’s about understanding volume, competition and readability. As an ENTITY Academy mentee, I was allowed to expand my knowledge on SEO and also utilize them in my writing.

Graphic Design

An ENTITY writer talks about her experience as an ENTITY Academy mentee.

Learning graphic design gave me the opportunity to embrace my creativity. Throughout my entire college career, I only took one graphics course, so graphic design was never my strongest asset. ENTITY gave me the opportunity to put my creative thought into my projects while utilizing the new skills I was given.

When it came to graphics, we learned that font, color and sizing is important. We were challenged to only use a maximum of two for each category.

Our projects taught me the importance of intricacy, font and color choices and white space in an image.

Adobe Software

Before the program, I had experience with InDesign and Photoshop. But ENTITY  gave me the chance to expand my skills with Adobe. I had never used Illustrator before but with careful and detailed instruction, I was able to get the hang of using the software to my best ability.

Overall, I was able to develop hard skills that I know I will need in my future career. Learning SEO, graphics and Adobe Software turned me into a better, more versatile journalist.
