ENTITY reports on fifth harmony members

The Fifth Harmony members may sing about “working from home,” but this girl group has been busy working all around the globe.

The girl group started with five talented women of color:  Camila Cabello, Ally Brooke, Normani Kordei, Dinah Jane and Lauren Jauregui. They all auditioned as solo artists on “The X Factor” in 2012, but they were placed together in a group to perform together.

And although they came in third place, they signed a joint record deal with Simon Cowell’s Syco Record’s label and L.A. Reid’s Epic Records label. After working on their music, their debut single “Miss Movin’ On” from their extended play, “Better Together,” went gold in the United States.

They also released their debut studio album, “Reflection,” in 2015, which reached gold as well. The following year, their single, “Work from Home,” from their second album, “7/27,” became Fifth Harmony’s first top ten single on the Billboard Hot 100.

In the five years they’ve been working together, this girl group has received awards from the iHeartRadio Music Awards, MTV Europe Music Awards, MTV’s Video Music Awards, American Music Awards, Billboard Women in Music and Teen Choice Awards.

So far, Fifth Harmony has sold over 400,000 albums and has stolen the hearts of fans across the globe. But if you’ve been living under a rock for the past five years, ENTITY has some cool information to teach you about one of our favorite female groups.

1 Camila Cabello

This 20-year-old singer recently left the group to pursue a solo career. Although there was a lot of drama there, both groups seem to be doing well separately. Since leaving, Camila released “Crying in the Club,” which she performed at the 2017 Billboard Music Awards.

And before even leaving the group, she also had a taste of the solo life. She released “I Know What You Did Last Summer” with Shawn Mendes and “Bad Things” with Machine Gun Kelly, both of which made it to the top 20 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100.

2 Ally Brooke Hernandez

As a premature baby herself, Hernandez has taken a special interest in issue by partnering with the nonprofit organization March of Dimes, which aims to bring awareness to premature babies. Hernandez showed her individuality amongst the group when she did an interview with Contrast magazine about her story of survival. She spoke about bringing hope and inspiration to her fans who might be also dealing with adversity.

“Feeling alone, feeling scared, feeling helpless and sad or lonely. Those feelings will go away, just continue to fight,” Hernandez told Contrast. “Continue to strive to be the best person you can be every day, because I promise you it’s temporary and there really is hope and joy in the future. You’ve just got to hold on.”

And with the uncertainty of Fifth Harmony’s future without Cabello, Hernandez has ventured into her own solo feature. She sings lead vocals on DJ duo Lost Kings’ “Look At Us Now,” featuring A$AP Ferg. The song is about realizing that sometimes your ex was always meant to just be your friend with benefits. She completely killed it.

3 Normani Kordei

Kordei came in third place on “Dancing with the Stars,” but we’re team Normani forever. Kordei really stole the show during her emotional contemporary dance with Val Chmerkovskiy. Before the performance, Kordei opened up about how the performance portrayed her struggles with cyber bullying.

“The piece is symbolic of times that I felt helpless and desperate,” Kordei said. “I got bullied terribly on social media. I did an interview. It was taken out of context completely and there were images. People were calling me the N word. It was really ugly.”

“Every time I went online it’s ‘Oh, how much we hate you. How talentless you are,’ Kordei continued. They actually made images of me being whipped, beaten, hung,” she continued.

With her emotional and personal performance, she received a perfect score. And with her dancing and singing skills, is there anything this girl can’t do?

4 Dinah Jane Hansen

The 20-year-old grew up in a Polynesian family with seven siblings. She talked to Teen about how there was never a dull moment growing up in a huge family. Although they didn’t have much, they did have music, which brought their family closer together.

“Music is something that can heal any argument. It brings unity. I love that so much. I’ve even noticed for Fifth Harmony that no matter the circumstances, we always have music to unite us,” Hansen told Teen.

She also said that her mother and grandmother inspired her to pursue a singing career. She talked about how one day, in church, she was supposed to walk on stage to speak, but she got so nervous that she just sang.

“I sang, ‘Love One Another,’  which is still one of my favorite songs,” she said. “My grandma ran up on stage and just started playing the piano with me. I grew up loving music at that age, and I wanted to be the perfect little singer.”

5 Lauren Jauregui

The 21-year-old singer made news with her open letter to President Donald Trump voters titled, “I Am a Bisexual Cuban-American Woman & I Am So Proud of It.” The open letter was published on Billboard a couple days after Trump won the presidency. She began the letter with how Trump’s presidency will destroy the progress America has made over the past few years. Then, she ended it with how she plans on using her voice to speak for other women.

She also followed the open letter with another open letter to the LGBTQ community. For Pride Month, she wrote about how her previous letter affected her journey as a bisexual artist attempting to change the world.

Jauregui also collaborated with Halsey on the song “Strangers” from Halsey’s album, “Hopeless Fountain Kingdom.” It’s a song that openly uses female pronouns. The song is a love song about two women with a longing for each other.

Halsey told J-14 that she chose Jauregui to feature on the song because they both had fans who related to them and expressed support for the outspoken women. She also chose the Fifth Harmony member because she’s openly bisexual like Halsey.

“I just love that Lauren and I are two women who have a mainstream pop presence doing a love song for the LGBT community. It’s rare to see it from a girl’s perspective,” Halsey told J-14.

Overall, Fifth Harmony is a group of four amazingly talented young women. And although they lost a harmony, we’re excited to see where the four of them take this group.
