“Grey’s Anatomy” is one of the longest running shows on cable television. Which isn’t a surprise since it’s the best medical show to have ever existed. Trust us. It is.

But, “Grey’s Anatomy” Season 12 was one of the best seasons yet.

Although w  want to get you caught up and refreshed on Season 13’s drama, we felt you should probably take a moment to appreciate the season before that.

Here are some of the most impactful things that happened on “Grey’s Anatomy” Season 12.

1 Penny s Shocking Entrance (Episode 4)

You may remember Penny as the person who killed Derek Shepherd. Well, she didn’t technically kill him, but she didn’t save him either. Considering what happened during Derek’s death, it was a shocker for all “Grey’s Anatomy” fans to have her come onto the show. The moment Meredith opened the door to see Callie and Penny together left jaws on the floor, guaranteed.

It so happens that Callie and Penny are a couple. What? It’s weird, we know. Especially because their on-screen chemistry was no bueno.

The biggest moment during this episode was when Meredith told everyone at the dinner table what Penny had done. “Perfect Penny killed my husband.” Pretty much.

But other than the fact everyone found out who Penny really was in this episode, it also gave her character a chance to learn from her mistakes. And it gave Meredith an opportunity to teach Penny the skills needed to not kill someone in emergency situations.

2 Meredith s Assault (Episode 9)

We have seen Meredith overcome a lot of things throughout the seasons. But nothing quite like this.

Meredith was attacked at the hands of a patient and let me say it is some of the best acting I have seen from Ellen Pompeo. That performance deserves an award.

With that aside, though, it was great to see how Meredith handled the situation and survived another traumatic life situation.

And although you would think the patient would be sent to jail, Meredith was able to forgive him because she knew he wasn’t himself during the incident.

3 Ben Warren Did What With a clipboard? (Episode 13)

Entity reports on Grey's Anatomy Season 12.

Ben went rogue on a patient and cut their throat open with a clipboard. But in his defense, he did it to save his life.

This incident – and multiple others – led to his suspension from the residency program. No, he didn’t get off scot-free because he was married to Chief Bailey. But he did get a lighter punishment than he would’ve gotten if he wasn’t with the boss.

As shocking as this was, this scene was an opportunity for Warren to show everyone that he is willing to do anything to save a patient. It wasn’t just about the fact he went rogue, it was also about his ability to act quickly in a difficult situation.

4 The Reveal of April s Pregnancy (Episode 11)

Entity reports on Grey's Anatomy Season 12.

After a very nice Japril episode that left people wondering if they were going to go through the divorce, Grey’s Anatomy made a shocking revelation. Nothing new, though.

April announced she was pregnant after she signed the divorce papers with Jackson. Nobody saw that coming, especially after the miscarriage the two suffered through the season before that.

And can we just talk about the fact she didn’t tell Jackson she was pregnant before signing the divorce papers? Pretty shady if you ask me.

5 Callie and Arizona s Custody Battle (Multiple Episodes)

Entity reports on Grey's Anatomy Season 12.

The only good thing that came out of this custody battle was that it gave Jessica Capshaw and Sara Ramirez more screen time. But at the end of the battle, Calzona fans were definitely Not. Happy.

Arizona won full custody for their daughter, Sophia, which many were livid about. But even though Arizona won, she still decided to work custody out with Callie outside of court because she understands that they both love their daughter.

This storyline, however, did give Callie (Sara Ramirez) a graceful exit, which was needed because Sara was ready to leave the show.

The relationship between Arizona and Callie had been rough since season 10. Thus, it was time for Callie to leave (at least for a while) to let Arizona find herself outside of the relationship.

6 Amelia Proposes to Owen (Episode 23)

Wait what?

Amelia and Owen’s relationship has always been a mess. They’re together one moment, then broken up the next. It just goes on and on.

Amelia seems to not really know what she wants in life. One moment she wants to be with Owen and the next she says she needs to focus on herself and her sobriety. But apparently she made up her mind and is now ready to marry Owen?

Owen deserves to have someone in his life who wants the same things he does. After his marriage with Cristina, we just hope Amelia can make him happy. He deserves that much.

With everything that went on during “Grey’s Anatomy” Season 12, sometimes you just need to take a breather. We love you, Shonda, but can some of our favorite characters be happy for longer than five minutes? Please?
