Entity celebrates the birthday of Julianne Moore.

Julianne Moore is one of America’s sweethearts, known as much for her unforgettable performances as for her glittering personality. And while the star has been honored for a variety of her works – boasting Oscar, Golden Globe, and Emmy wins – today calls for a different kind of celebration: for her birthday!

The beloved actress is turning 56, and in honor of her special day, Entity looks back at five of her best roles.

1 Alice Howland – “Still Alice” (2014)

She took home the Oscar in 2015 for her moving performance in this Richard Glatzer and Wash Westmoreland drama. Julianne beautifully depicted the heartbreaking struggle of renowned linguistic professor Alice Howland as she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease.  Her once contentious daughter, played by Kristen Stewart, ends up being her rock and the way the relationship plays out defines Julianne Moore’s range.

2 Maude Lebowski – “The Big Lebowski” (1998)

Julianne put forth another memorable performance as feminist artist Maude in this cult classic by Joel and Ethan Cohen. Who could forget her dramatic entrance and controversial monologue as she explained her work to “The Dude” (Jeff Bridges)? She boldly declared, “My art has been commended as being strongly vaginal, which bothers some men.”

3 Jules – “The Kids Are All Right” (2010)

She watched her children reach out to their biological father – a sperm donor played by Mark Ruffalo – in this star-studded drama. Julianne showed depth in her portrayal of the mother-of-two, as she dealt with the sperm donor’s entrance into her and her children’s life while she attempts to maintain her same-sex relationship with wife Nic (played by Annette Bening).

4 President Alma Coin – “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 & 2” (2014, 2015)

Julianne joined fellow heavy hitters, Jennifer Lawrence and Philip Seymour Hoffman, as a leader of the rebellion in the final two films of the popular, dystopian franchise. She used her remarkable talents to portray a cold, calculating ruler.

5 Nancy Donovan – “30 Rock” (2009-2013)

Film is not the only avenue on which Julianne has showed off her skills. She memorably appeared as Jack Donaghy’s (Alec Baldwin) forbidden love, Nancy, on the award-winning NBC comedy created by Tina Fey. She used a thick, Boston accent as Jack’s high school crush with whom he just couldn’t quite make it work. And though many high-profile women portrayed love interests for Jack throughout the series – Elizabeth Banks, Salma Hayek – Julianne held her own as an unforgettable guest star.
