What does a healthy gut have to do with the most romantic day of the year?

Surprisingly … a lot. If you want to celebrate Valentine’s Day with a passionate date with your special someone, that is.

See, microbes – most of which are found in your gut – actually make us sexy, according to MIT microbiologist Susan Erdman.

Entity reports that a healthy gut could actually be responsible for making you attractive to others.

They create what Erdman calls “the glow of health,” since microbes in your gut can give you smooth skin, shiny hair and even put a spring in your step.

She made the interesting discovery some years ago when she found that mice grew unusually lustrous fur after being fed a probiotic microbe.

Erdman has since suggested that microbes are in fact what make us attractive to potential mates. In fact, when you decided to go out with your cute Tinder match, you weren’t just swayed by his or her good genes. You also inadvertently chose a microbial community that could facilitate reproduction.

You can thank your healthy gut for smooth skin and shiny hair, Entity reports.

Dr. Edward Catalano also stressed the importance of the gut to the Huffington Post, explaining that it contains living organisms that are so active and influential in our body that they are sometimes referred to as the “second brain” in our gut.

They produce hormones, enzymes and neurotransmitters like serotonin, which is essential for sexual health. Serotonin is important because it works to control and improve blood flow to several areas, including the female genitals.

And ladies, it can even help enhance your orgasm. That’s right, you can thank microbes – and okay, your partner – for that big moment.

It actually makes a lot of sense, too, since Erdman explains the microbes are merely trying to ensure their own continued existence.

By making you sexy and increasing the hormones that bring mammals together, microbes ensure their future with the creation of another host – aka and baby makes three.

So how do you maintain these precious microbes? Dr. Catalano says it all comes down to a healthy lifestyle.

A diet rich in veggies, fruits and good fats like olive, coconut and avocado oil combined with a normal exercise routine will keep your gut happy and your sex life spicy.

So maybe this Valentine’s Day grab your special someone and hit the gym. You’ll both be happy you did.
