Historic women of Los Angeles tour and talk.Image via Cartwheel Art

As a city, Los Angeles is known primarily for entertainment and the arts. But this city is steeped in a rich history full of powerful female figures. These women have been often overlooked—until now.

On Tuesday, June 23rd at 6 pm PST, Cartwheel Art will be hosting an event live on Zoom. They will discuss some of the most fascinating Historic Women of Los Angeles.

The event is going to be hosted by Hadley Meares who is a historical journalist, podcast host, and tour guide with Cartwheel Art. The event is free to attend, but you can send tips to Meares through Paypal or Venmo.

Cartwheel Art is an organization in Downtown Los Angeles that offers tours, curates experiences, and hosts events. They have a series of on-going tours that explore the Arts District’s history. They have one about criminals and the mafia. For a boozier experience, they have a tour of the history of cocktails and bars downtown. They have a graffiti tour of DTLA complete with a graffiti-painting workshop. They even a ghost tour for L.A.’s bravest tourists.

Due to COVID-19 and the social distancing measures that have been taken in L.A., Cartwheel Art has not been able to do any of their in-person tours. However, they are still offering some of their tours and events through Zoom.

Cartwheel Art also has its own online magazine. They conduct interviews with artists and cover relevant events in the Arts District.

Historic Women of Los Angeles

The Historic Women of Los Angeles event is a part of their current discussion series. According to the description of the event on their website, they will, “Discuss amazing, long-overlooked women who made a big impact on the development of Los Angeles, from real estate magnate and philanthropist Biddy Mason to hardcore editor and crime reporter Aggie Underwood.”

It’s fantastic that Cartwheel Art is sharing L.A.’s history not just with those in the city, but for those around the world who maybe can’t make it out to the City of Angels right now.

We here at ENTITY are huge fans of #WomenThatDo and we love learning about our foremothers. We encourage anyone in our network that is interested in history and/or badass women to check it out. The link to RSVP for this event is here. Hope to see you there!
