Welcome to motherhood, Janet! Singer and actress Janet Jackson has confirmed her first pregnancy at 50 years old.

The sister of the King of Pop is an entertainment sensation in her own right. Janet has been in the business since 1976 when she appeared on her family’s T.V. series “The Jacksons.” The female actress transitioned into music in the ’80s, gaining a dedicated fan base with the release of her third album, “Control.” The inspirational woman is still performing, though she postponed her World Tour until next year to focus on her family.

The pop music celebrity announced her exciting news on Wednesday, October 12 via People Magazine. Janet will be starting a family with her husband, Wissam Al Mana. “We thank God for our blessing,” she told People.

While exciting news, this pregnancy may pose a risk for Janet. Women who get pregnant at 35 plus years have a greater risk of having a child with Down Syndrome, according to maternal-fetal medicine expert Shannon Clark via USA Today. Women (and men) in this age range are also at risk of developing a lifelong medical ailment such as diabetes or heart disease.

Despite the risk, Janet is part of the growing late-motherhood trend. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention reports that the average age of mothers is considerably older in today’s culture. Women have chosen to take this path for diverse reasons, such as taking time to build their careers before starting a family. Many of these women find joy in waiting for motherhood, as their older age brings pairs with crucial life experiences and achievements, including emotional maturity and financial stability.
