Have you ever felt scared, alone and like you didn’t know how to ask for help in life? Those are often the feelings of the one in five American women and one in 13 American men who are sexually assaulted during college. Perhaps even worse, less than 10 percent of these survivors report their assault to their school or to the police … and 99 percent of rapists get away with their crimes (as you’ve probably seen with stories like that of Brock Turner or Austin James Wilkerson).

According to this TED Talk with Jessica Ladd, this doesn’t have to be the case for men and women today.

While this video is frighteningly honest about the state of sexual assault in universities and America overall, it offers a glimmer of hope: A new platform has been developed that college students can use to confidentially report incidents of sexual assault. Not only does this website allow survivors to electronically report their assault, but women can also create a secure, time-stamped document with details of the attack and learn if someone else has reported the same assailant.

With this system, Ladd hopes to stop repeat offenders and deter future assaults. Even more than that, though, Ladd hopes to create a world where men and women can live safely and rapists pay for their crimes.
