Entity reveals that Katie Holmes says raising her daughter comes first.

Although Katie Holmes is a busy actress, and now a director too, being a mother takes priority in her life.

“When I go to an event, I leave at 10 p.m. because it’s really important to me to be a mom that is dependable,” she says  in a Modern Luxury interview. “When I’m not on set, I’m being a mom. I’m doing mom stuff.”

Family has always been a priority for the Hollywood star, and that’s something she wants to teach Suri, her 10-year-old daughter with ex-husband Tom Cruise.

According to the single mom, she wants to give her daughter the same kind of experiences she had while growing up in a big family in Toledo, Ohio. “It’s important to me,” she says. “We do a lot of cousin time with my nieces and nephews. I think the most important thing I’m my life is giving my child the childhood I want her to have. That comes first.”

Raising her daughter “dictates where I work and when I work because it’s my main job right now,” Holmes adds.

Her new drama film, “All We Had,” is about a mother-daughter relationship. As both the director and star of the movie, she explains to Modern Luxury that she was careful to choose for her directorial debut subject matter that she understood well.

“I thought if I’m going to do something I’ve never done before, I should pick something I feel comfortable with,” she says. “I’m from a family of five children, and I have three sisters. That female relationship is familiar to me.”

And as a mother, Holmes is especially equipped to handle her new role as Rita, an impoverished single mother who escapes an abusive relationship with her husband.

“A mother’s love is greater than anything; it’s definitely a universal theme,” Holmes adds.

Katie says that she dedicates “All We Had,” which will be released on Dec. 9, to her daughter.

“It was my first film and I want her to always know that she’s the inspiration behind everything,” Holmes tells ET. “And so hopefully it means something as she gets older. Just to let her know how important she is.”

Katie returns to the director’s chair next year for an episode of TV miniseries, “The Kennedys: After Camelot,” in which she also stars as former first lady Jackie Kennedy.
