Singer-songwriter Maggie Rogers’ latest release “Alaska” is sure to give you chills.
The up-and-coming music artist blends high-energy beats with a voice that oozes elegant confidence. Her new video “Alaska” is a bit of a fairytale daydream; it calms the soul while simultaneously satisfying our ears and answering our prayers for a fresh approach to the predictable music scene.
Rogers’ first official music video – courtesy of VEVO – was released two days ago and is already trending online. The video has a natural, indie aesthetic; scenes of the hip girl squad dancing through a field of trees are punctuated by a low-light filter to please hipster hearts.
Turns out the singer-songwriter was discovered by non-other than entertainment icon Pharrell. Rogers, an NYU student, was taking Pharrell William’s college course back in February. After listening to her track, the celeb showered the aspiring artist with compliments and encouragement.
Much like Pharrell, Pitchfork had nothing but praise for the breakout star.
“‘Alaska’ is one of those songs where the beat is so palpable, the rhythm so ingrained in every fiber of the music, that the actual lyrics become secondary, so long as the flow is maintained through a stunning waterfall of Rogers’ folksy falsetto harmonizing with itself,” Pitchfork said.
So what’s next for Rogers? According to NPR, the unsigned artist is currently working on an EP, though a release date has not yet been announced. Until then, fans can stream her first two high school albums on her Bandcamp page.
