Entity discusses the real definition of "going green" and how to be environmentally friendly.

Because environmental health has been a trending topic, maybe you already know what it means to “go green.” Perhaps you’re even a woman who practices what she preaches by living an eco-friendly lifestyle. Either way, you probably haven’t heard a clear definition of the phrase.

Well, according to the Going Green Web Guide through Middletown Thrall Library, “going green” is a “means to pursue knowledge and practices that can lead to more environmentally friendly and ecologically responsible decisions and lifestyles, which can help protect the environment and sustain its natural resources for current and future generations.”  This includes changing everyday habits to ones that help conserve the Earth’s natural resources.

So, for those of you who are interested in doing your sustainable part, here are some ways you can go green.

1 TURN THE LIGHTS OFF.

If you’re not using them, they don’t need to be on!  Don’t leave lights on all night if you can help it and your electricity bill will show the result of your efforts. Another way to conserve energy is to switch to compact fluorescent bulbs, which last longer and save energy.

2 RECYCLE.

Set up two trash bins at home; one for recycling and one for trash. Only certain things can be recycled so be careful since improper recycling decreases efficiency at sorting facilities. Some items that can be recycled include newspapers and water bottles. Plastic bags and styrofoam cannot be recycled, but they can definitely be reused.

3 BUY LOCAL.

Pesticide and antibiotic-free foods are less harmful to the environment and your body. By supporting local farmers instead of a widespread agricultural business, you support the environment. Look for those organic labels!

4 SWITCH TO A HYBRID OR ELECTRIC CAR.

These cars reduce the amount of oil used and the amount of pollution emitted into the atmosphere. According to Green Car Reports, there are also federal and local incentives to making the switch such as tax credits. Driving will cost much less with an electric car.

5 INSTALL SOLAR PANELS.

Why produce your own energy when you can get it from the sun? Your electric bills will thank you for the installation! However, make sure you live in an area that supports solar panel efficiency because there are many factors such as roof angle, the number of hours of sunlight per day, and rainfall that must be considered.

6 USE NATURAL AND ORGANIC PRODUCTS.

Tons of chemicals in our daily products such as dish soap, lotion, and laundry detergent are washed down the drain or disposed of improperly. These products end up contaminating our oceans and decreasing the amount of available fresh water. Switch to natural and organic products to ensure that you are diminishing your impact on the environment with harmful pollutants.

Now, if you want to join the millions of others doing their part to go green, you know some daily ways to contribute!
