Entity reports on how Melania Trump and Hillary Clinton could be style twinsMelania's Ralph Lauren Inauguration look emulates - purposely - Jackie Kennedy's sixties style

No two women could ever be more diametrically opposed than Hillary Clinton and Melania Trump – and yet they wore the same designer, Ralph Lauren, to the inauguration.

It was a surprise because they are so different in their personal styles. One of them screams “I’m all business!” – the other might as well be saying, “I’m all sex!”

Hillary is a fan of sharply cut tailored pantsuits, with longer jackets over male-style trousers – often in bright colors or white. Beauty-wise, she wears her champagne colored short hair very sleek, and a clean face with a slight soft lightly-applied red lip. Melania Trump is a fan of the luxe European brand Balmain – sexy sophisticated looks with stilettos, tight dresses, always very fitted, with crisp by shapely feminine coats and jackets. She has long wavy streaked hair, and often sports a very smoky eye and light lip.

Both women have worn elder statesman all-American designer Ralph Lauren before – Melania in white on election night; and Hillary at each of the presidential debates, in red, white and blue on each occasion. And then, of course, Hillary wore the now-infamous black and purple Ralph Lauren suit the night of her concession speech; purple being the symbol of the blue and red states finally coming together (which they or course didn’t.)

The difference, though: Melania paid for her election night chic white Ralph Lauren look – she bought it at Ralph’s Madison Avenue store on the Upper East Side – a quick limo ride from Trump Tower. Hillary’s Lauren – including the inauguration day nude Ralph Lauren Collection matching cashmere coat and pantsuit, with a funnel neck – were made for her custom by the designer.

Lauren made no secret of his support for Hillary Clinton throughout her candidacy – as did many designers, such as Marc Jacobs and Tom Ford. Even Vogue’s Anna Wintour endorsed Clinton – helped get designers to dress her – and raised money for her campaign. Clinton has also historically had three Vogue covers and was due for another one – till she didn’t win. Melania has had one cover, for her wedding to Trump: let’s see if she gets another one. We doubt it – though Vogue.com is covering her wardrobe and closet.

But good for Lauren, for making Melania’s inauguration powder blue cocoon jacket with three quarter sleeves and matching dress, that wraps near the neck (an obvious homage to Jackie O in the sixties), for her – and apparently we’ll see other Lauren custom looks for the new FLOTUS.

While the mostly liberal fashion community in New York might take homage with this bipartisan – to say the least – move – billionaire Ralph Lauren, 77, has absolutely nothing to lose at this point – even if there was a boycott called on his label. Neither does the equally wealthy Karl Lagerfeld of Chanel, 83, have a thing to lose – as he came out and said he’d love to dress the new First Lady. Both men are near retirement, have made their fortunes and their names – and as long as the clothes look great – nobody will stop looking. After all, about 35 million people watch inaugurations. That’s gotta move some merch, as we say in the biz!

Looks like Ralph has now become the official FLOTUS designer of choice – though Michelle Obama rarely wore him – and was very partial to young and new designers.
