Monica Crowley is the next confirmed addition to the Trump Administration.

Crowley, a former FOX News analyst, will join the National Security Council. Her official job title will be Deputy National Security Advisor for Strategic Communications and Speechwriting.

Though she is known as a face of FOX News, Crowley has been in the political world since she was a 22-year-old student. After she wrote a series of letters to former President Richard Nixon, he hired her in 1990 as his research assistant. Crowley took on an editorial role to advise and consult Nixon prior to the publication of his final two books.

This unusual start propelled her into the world of political journalism. She wrote two books about Nixon before she switched to a reporting style with a column for The New York Post. She also wrote articles featured in prominent publications, including The New Yorker and The Wall Street Journal, before securing the role as the online opinion editor and columnist for The Washington Times.

In addition to her writing career, she established her reputation as a journalist with other media. Crowley joined FOX News in 1996 and has since bounced around shows as a political commentator and panelist. Crowley also began hosting the radio program, “The Monica Crowley Show,” back in 2002.

Though she is more of a media presence than public servant, Crowley holds a bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Colgate University as well as a doctorate in International Relations from Columbia University. Currently she serves as a member on the Council of Foreign Relations.

This upcoming year, however, she will be joining Trump’s administration as a member of the National Security Council.

The President-elect’s transition team sent a tweet out about the announcement, seen below, also confirming the related appointments of Lieutenant General Keith Kellogg and David Friedman.

Despite her credentials, her appointment has sparked controversy online. Social media users have pointed out how her previous statements, specifically on Twitter, may not align with the job requirements.

A tweet from Brandon Friedman – writer, entrepreneur and former Obama administration official – resurfaced a June 2016 statement Crowley made on Twitter, suggestion suggesting that Putin should release Hillary Clinton’s emails if the State Department wouldn’t.

Kyle Griffin, producer for MSNBC’s “The Last Word,” also contributed to the conversation with his tweet, “Reminder – Monica Crowley, reportedly in Trump’s Nat’l Sec. Council, once used the Berlin Wall as an effective argument for the border wall,” referencing Crowley’s tweet with a photo of herself in Germany and the caption, “At The Berlin Wall last week. Walls Work.”

Crowley will succeed Ben Rhodes when she assumes the new position on January 20, 2017.
