Entity reviews the trending Broadway musicals that are worth your time and money.

Ever since you first saw “Cats,” you’ve listened to nothing but Broadway music. Instead of downloading the latest Katy Perry album, you’re jammin’ to “Wicked.” You know the choreography for “All that Jazz” from “Chicago” and you could recite “La Vie Boheme” in your sleep. Those are the classics – but do you know the hot new musicals on the block?

Well, here are ENTITY’s four must-see musicals you need to check out that are trending in the theater world:

1 FUN HOME

This musical, based on Alison Bechdel’s best-selling graphic novel of the same name, is both heartwarming and heartbreaking.  It tells the story of Alison at three different ages as she examines her relationship with her dysfunctional family and closeted father. As the first musical with a lesbian protagonist, “Fun Home” is the winner of five different Tony’s, including the 2015 Tony Award for Best Musical.  Better see it soon, however, as the musical is leaving Broadway on September 10th. If you don’t get a chance to see it then, don’t worry – a followup tour is promised.

2 AN AMERICAN IN PARIS

An American in Paris” is the story of a classic love affair that has swept its way into viewers’ hearts. Based on the 1951 film staring Gene Kelly, “An American in Paris” tells the story of an American solider who falls in love with an unattainable French girl at the end of the Second World War. The choreography by Tony Award-winning Christopher Wheeldon beautifully blends jazz and classic ballet into one dreamy mixture, paying perfect homage to the original film. Featuring music by George Gershwin, the show is a must-see for fans of the classic Hollywood film.

3 WAITRESS

Based on the adorable Keri Russell and Adrienne Shelly film “Waitress,” this Broadway musical is a “sweet slice,” according to Entertainment Weekly. Jessie Mueller plays Jenna who, according to the show’s website, is “a waitress and expert pie maker in a small town who dreams of a way out of her loveless marriage.” With music by Grammy Award winning Sara Bareilles and starring Tony Award winning Jessie Mueller, the show is a delicious blend of reality and whimsy.

4 KINKY BOOTS

Sparkly thigh-high heels, drag queens, Cyndi Lauper,  blue-collar England – one of these things is not like the other. This funny and heartwarming musical is evidence that differences can always be set aside to bring people together.  Based on the 2005 comedy-drama of the same name, this musical follows the paths of Charlie, a factory owner, and Lola, an entertainer, as they “embrace their differences and create a line of sturdy stilettos unlike any the world has ever seen” according to the website. With a score by Cyndi Lauper and tours in Australia, Ontario, New York and London, “Kinky Boots” is a show you just can’t miss.
