The next National Dessert Day is on October 14, so you might as well just take the gym out of your schedule and dessert prep.

But if you need help celebrating, here are some of our favorite #treatyoself desserts.

1 Donuts

Donuts are one of the most popular desserts in America and they have different names. They also go by doughnuts, sufganiyot and paczi.

This dessert is made out of dough and is deep fried until they achieve the perfect gold layer. They are then topped with glaze and, sometimes, some sprinkles.

But who created donuts?

According to The Huffington Post, Dutch settlers blessed us when they introduced doughnuts to the U.S. They were originally called “olykoeks,” or oily cakes, and were fried in pork fat. And unlike today, this dessert was traditionally enjoyed during the Christmas season.

But now, donut shops have taken over our street corners and we’re not mad about it. From Krispy Kreme to Dunkin’ Donuts, these glazed treats are here to stay.

2 Cheesecake

The invention of the cheesecake dates back to thousands of years ago. It’s one of the earliest forms of desserts and it continues to be a fan favorite.

Cheesecake consists of two layers. The top one is a creamy cheese, egg and sugar mix and the bottom includes crushed graham crackers or Oreo cookies.

Cheesecake.com says the first cheesecake may have been created on the Greek island of Samos. There was a Greek cheesecake recipe written in 230 A.D. by Athenaeus. But while it is the oldest known surviving Greek recipe, many believe cheesecake was being served 2,000 years before that.

However, regardless of when it was first created, we’re happy cheesecake exists now. Reward yourself with some cheesecake from The Cheesecake Factory or make your own personalized dessert.

3 Chocolate Chip Cookies

On National Dessert Day, who wouldn’t want to binge-eat warm homemade chocolate chip cookies?

Chocolate chip cookies are perfect for when you are sad, happy, mad – anything, really. Heartbroken? Have a cookie. Excited? Have a cookie. Nervous? Have a cookie.

Ruth Wakefield ran the popular Toll House restaurant in Whitman, Massachusetts with her husband Kenneth from 1930 to 1967 and she was the one who brought the Toll House Chocolate Crunch Cookie into the world in the late 1930s.

We’d like to just take the time to thank Ruth for sharing such a magical dessert.

The amount of different ice cream flavors you can choose from is mind blowing.

There’s chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, butter pecan, cookies ‘n’ creme, mint chocolate chip and the list goes on. National Dessert Day is the best day to grab a bucket of ice cream while watching TV. No one will judge you.

And who’s responsible for creating this delicious frozen dessert? According to the International Dairy Foods Association, Catherine de Medici introduced France to frozen desserts in 1553 when she became the wife of Henry II. But, it wasn’t until 1660 when ice cream was made available to the general public.

5 Crepes

Crêpes is a popular dessert everyone wants to get their hands on.

A traditional crêpe looks like a very thinly cooked pancake that is usually made from wheat flour. In fact, the word crêpe is French for pancake and is derived from the Latin word that means “curled.”

Crêpes can be savory or sweet. You can serve crêpes with meat, cheese, eggs and spinach if you want a satisfying meal. But for the sake of National Dessert Day, we suggest filling your crêpe with sweet things like jam, melted chocolate, dairy, ice cream, Nutella, bananas, berries or cinnamon. Other popular sweet toppings include sugar (granulated or powdered), maple syrup, lemon juice, whipped cream, fruit spreads and sliced soft fruits.

The options are endless.

Tiramisu is a popular coffee-flavored Italian custard dessert.

According to Living Language, tiramisu was created in Florence by the Grand Duke of Tuscany, Cosimo de Medici in the late 1600s.

Jane Black, a writer for The Washington Post says, “Tiramisu, which means ‘pick me up’ – a reference to its shot of espresso – was an instant hit. Chefs [came] to taste it and soon they were [making] their own versions … By the early ’80s, tiramisu had become ubiquitous throughout Italy and beyond.”

If you’ve never tried Tiramisu before, the we definitely recommend going outside your food comfort zone on National Dessert Day.

And now that you’re probably craving one or more of these desserts, it’s time for you to go and celebrate this special holiday – even if you’re a couple months early.
