Although Pablo Escobar’s wife goes by Tata in “Narcos,” his-real life wife was Maria Victoria Henao.
Pablo and Maria Victoria married in 1976 when she was just 15 years old and he was 26. They had two children together, Juan Pablo and Manuela.
Despite Escobar’s lifestyle, the two remained together until he died in 1993. But what actually happened to Maria Victoria Henao after his passing? Here’s what ENTITY knows.
In the hit Netflix series, Tata Escobar’s character grows from Pablo’s accessory to a central part of his decision making. In season two, Tata proves that she’s more than just a Colombian housewife.
She holds her own against Pablo Escobar’s mother and she even buys a gun to take control of her personal safety. She also becomes Pablo’s consultant, offering him advice about the business when needed.
Thanks to Escobar’s decisions, he was one of the world’s most wanted men when he died in 1993. After that, Maria Victoria and her two children did what they could to avoid any retaliation from his enemies.
In 1995, after searching for countries to grant them asylum, the family fled Colombia for a new life abroad. According to the BBC, Juan Pablo Escobar even asked the Vatican to help them find a place to live.
The family of three eventually moved to Buenos Aires.
Maria Victoria Henao Vellejo became Maria Isabel Santos Caballero in order to enter Buenos Aires. Her son Juan Pablo also changed his name to Juan Sebastian Marroquin Santos.
In 2000, Henao and her son were arrested for money laundering. At the time, Colombian drug lords in Uruguay were allegedly sending Maria and her family money. For this, she spent 15 months in jail with her son until authorities finally released them due to insufficient evidence.
A few lawyers tried charging the two with anything, including drug trafficking, but they came up with nothing.
In response to this, Henao told the press: “I am a prisoner in Argentina for being Colombian. They want to try the ghost of Pablo Escobar because they want to prove that Argentina is combatting drug trafficking.”
It seems like they’re trying their best to stay out of the spotlight Pablo Escobar created.
Escobar’s son, however, is doing the opposite. After the release and rise of “Narcos,” Sebastian Marroquin spoke about about how inaccurate the series is. Not only that, but he’s since tried to right the wrongs committed by his father years ago.
