Are you the kind of woman who has a collection of books you want to read sometime in your life? You have a classics list, the historical fiction list, the young adult list and the miscellaneous list that accumulates on your phone. For some reason, however, the lists don’t seem to get any shorter.
You try to keep your list of good books to read maintained on a regular basis, which also means you spend your fair share of time in a bookstore. Every place you go, you search for used bookstores. And every time you leave the store, you end up purchasing something to add to your growing collection. But, you know you need to stop because you have stacks of books at home that are begging to be read. Why won’t you read them?
Perhaps you just don’t have the time. Maybe you originally bought the book because you marveled at its beautiful, artistic design.
Whatever your reason, you already know that you are a self-proclaimed book hoarder. So, here are some ground rules to help you read the books you’ve already bought to make room for your next list.
Never keep them in your wallet so that if you do go into a bookstore, you are less likely to purchase anything. You won’t be as willing to pay for anything when you know you have gift cards at home.
Set yourself a goal of reading X number of books from the TBR (To Be Read) pile before you decide to add a new one to it. It will allow you to move through the pile while maintaining a healthy flow of books coming in.
If you go to a bookstore, don’t bring your wallet with you, just take your phone. If you see a book you like, start a list in your notes; that way you’ll be able to come back and buy it when you have depleted your TBR stack.
Don’t go to a bookstore alone. The buddy system is everything. If you are with others, you are less likely to buy something. They can always be there to drag you away if you try to pull a fast one on them.
If you absolutely need to read a book outside of your TBR, check it out from your local library. You don’t have to pay for it and you are helping to support one of the best institutions created.
