After graduating from ENTITY’s Writer’s Collective as a Mentee in 2019, I became an Internal Mentor for the Academy in 2020. In such unprecedented times, I wondered what it would be like to work for the Academy in the age of COVID-19 but, let me tell you:

My experience as a Mentee took me far; coming back to ENTITY as an Internal Mentor took me further.

Here is an inside scoop on what it’s like to work for ENTITY’s Writer’s Collective IVL.

What are the Responsibilities of an Internal Mentor?

As an Internal Mentor, you’ll work across multiple platforms in a rapidly changing landscape. This is a dynamic role that will involve a multitude of responsibilities:

  • Work closely with the Mentees through one-on-one mentorship
  • Understand their needs and goals, respond promptly to their questions, reach out to them when required
  • Lead small-scale workshops that help Mentees cultivate soft skills
  • Assist Mentees with questions about hard skills such as SEO, InDesign, polishing a resume, and digital marketing
  • Communicate and coordinate schedules with world-class Mentors for the ENTITY Speakers Series
  • Edit articles with knowledge of WordPress, AP style, writing for the web, sourcing and fact checking etc.
  • Help maintain and project ENTITY’s voice and tone in the editorial and publication process
  • Participate in the UCLA Extension Social Media Marketing course, communicate with the UCLAx team
  • Create Google forms and Google spreadsheets for organizing and interpreting data
  • Work as the liaison between the Mentees and the ENTITY team

My Testimonial

Over the three weeks of the Writer’s Collective IVL program, I not only applied my skillsets in a variety of ways, but also nourished and expanded them. Among these skills was leadership. As an Internal Mentor, I found that leading a group of women led to the development of grit and perseverance.

This role will involve your energy, organization, and engagement. It is meant for those who wish to support and mentor others, and also those who are looking for intense personal growth. I recommend the following qualities in a candidate:

  • An experienced editor who can catch typos, misleading and confusing syntax, and grammatical errors
  • An organized individual who is comfortable with coordinating a lot of tasks while working under pressure
  • A great communicator who can maintain and sustain relationships
  • Someone who is interested and well-versed in trends and the digital world
  • Someone who is looking to develop their skills and leadership

In my experience, being an Internal Mentor involved hard work, multi-tasking, and focus. Although I was behind a computer, I engaged in a high-energy environment. I navigated different platforms including ENTITY’s virtual platform, ENTITY’s virtual campus, and Canvas through UCLA Extension.

With that being said, the position can be challenging. You will have to manage your time wisely, overcome unforeseen scenarios, and work with individuals and groups. But, let me tell you, this is where the growth happens.

And so What Does this Mean for You?

I recommend this position without reservation. It is an extremely rewarding role where you’ll be able to watch the development of your Mentees, implement a broad skillset, and engage in meaningful communication.

Your hard work will be appreciated, and it won’t go unnoticed. The ENTITY team and network is relentlessly supportive, and roots for your success. They will help you if you ask, and will be there for you in and out of the “office.”

The position also offers many opportunities to build relationships with the ENTITY network. My own relationships expanded and bloomed as I connected with Mentors, introduced a few of them to the ENTITY audience for the live Speakers Series, and also followed up with them via email. Entering the Internal Mentor space will bring you to new levels of connection.

ENTITY Academy is a community of women that fosters growth for both Mentees and Internal Mentors. I found the position to be rich and rewarding, and I would be happy to speak about it to anyone who is interested in the position.
