Entity discusses the future of electronic and hybrid cars.

One of original highways in the United States, Route 66 is about to make history again. In an era where energy consumption is growing and our original resources are depleting, going green seems to be a positive solution. Route 66, also known as the Main Street of America, is paving the way for some new and exciting changes in this area.

The first stage of going green means providing for electronic or hybrid cars. One of the hardships of having an electric car is finding a charging station. While planning to take a trip through Route 66, electric car owners might find it discouraging to drive their vehicles along this hundreds of miles long stretch.

However, in order to make Route 66 more green, more charging stations have been built, including the addition of several locations in Illinois, the start point of this historical highway. According to Finance & Commerce, “BMW, Mitsubishi, and Nissan are supporting the $1 million effort with technical help from the University of California at Davis. Officials say it the project will cover eight cities, and each site will have at least one fast-charging station.”

Another vital part of sustainability is public transportation. Mayor Richard Berry of Albuquerque and his administration are leading an initiative to purchase electric-powered buses. City officials informed the Albuquerque Journal that while this project is estimated to cost $24 million, the savings over the years will make up for it. Known as the Albuquerque Rapid Transit project, the acquisition of electric-powered buses will also reduce the extreme pollution caused by their diesel-powered counterparts.

In addition, Route 66 will be the first solar roadway in the United States. Solarroadways says, “It is obvious that it is time to modernize the highway system and create the first roadway system with a return on investment (ROI). In this way, two goals can be accomplished simultaneously: the creation of a modular, modern infrastructure while creating the renewable energy needed to effectively end the current dependence on fossil fuels.”

While this is a expensive venture, over time the money saved and greener environment will make up for the initial high cost.
