ENTITY reports on how to safely bleach hair while taming frizz

Bleaching was probably the scariest thing I have ever done to my hair.

Like most girls with curly hair, anything I use on my hair can either make or break my look. My curls are prone to frizziness and dryness which come from all of the damaging I do to my hair, so when I started looking into bleaching and dying my hair I quickly shut it down.

A month of research later, I finally gave bleaching my hair a try and now I am obsessed! This is the way I safely bleach hair while totally taming the frizz:

The key to keeping out frizz after bleaching: Coconut Oil

Coconut oil before bleaching hair is probably my holy grail of all hair products. If you are worried about the frizz that comes from bleaching your hair, pick up a jar of coconut oil and watch all of your problems go away.  First things first, gather all of the supplies you need to set camp:

  • coconut oil
  • a comb
  • a packet or two of bleach (based on the length of your hair)
  • volume activator
  • toner
  • hair cap
  • gloves
  • mixing bowl
  • application brush
  • towel (you’ll probably want to toss it after)

Melt the coconut oil and rub it into your hair. Don’t be stingy with the oil, either, because the more you put, the more protected and soft your hair will be.

Leave the oil in your hair for a minimum of three hours with a hair cap to keep the oil from messing up your clothes and pillow. Now catch some Z’s — the rest of the process happens in the morning.

Rise and Shine

So now that you’ve protected your hair and applied a deep conditioner, the real party begins. In your mixing bowl, mix a 2:1 ratio of toner to bleach (every package is different so follow instructions on the package), and apply your bleach. Part your hair in small portions and apply the bleach evenly throughout the roots of your hair. Keep in mind, you’ll probably need a partner to help you reach the back of your head.

If you’re an independent woman who knows she can do this alone, here’s how to safely bleach hair alone: Bleach, process, and rinse the front part of your hair and do the back separately as you don’t want to leave the bleach in your hair for more than an hour.

Wash out the chemicals

Shampoo your hair twice to rinse out all of the bleach and oil. Your hair will feel a little hard and crisp, but don’t be tempted to use conditioner.

The final step

In your mixing bowl, mix your toner and activator. When you hair is almost completely dry, start applying the toner into the roots of your hair with the application brush the same way you applied your bleach.

Wait about 15 minutes for the toner on your roots to dry, and then start applying the toner to the rest of the hair. Once you have colored your whole head, wait a few minutes until you see the color you are aiming for. Now it’s time to rinse and heavily condition your hair.
