Pets June 19, 2017
Are they even animals still?
Move over, Global Top 50. Cats have taken over Spotify playlists and they are here to stay.
Two 19-year old roommates recently found a Spotify playlist titled “Pet Therapy – Calming Music For Cats.” The roommates, Julie Newcombe and Haleigh Boulanger, live in Arizona with their two cats, Rusty and Cody. They started playing the music for their cats and the felines actually seem to enjoy it. Julie and Haleigh believe that listening to the playlist helps the cats get along better with one another.
Playing music for cats may seem extreme, but it’s just one of many ways that people treat pets as humans.
Here are a few other ways pets are taking over.
When did the simple act of playing fetch or reading a book with your cat curled up on your lap become not enough? Apparently a while ago, considering the Instagram account @catsofinstagram has well over one million followers and features cats whose humans like to dress them up. In other words, it’s a thing.
We are firm believers that pets are part of the family. However, purchasing Santa hats, unicorn horns or any other costume to play dress up as if your pet is some kind of 4-year-old child seems a tad too far.
The days of filling up your pet’s bowl with dry food from a large generic bag are long gone. This website lists 50 of the best organic cat food brands of 2017. Many of the brands advertise gluten-free options for felines, as if our society wasn’t already obsessed with being gluten-free. Next thing you know there will be Whole Foods for cats.
Not all people have or even need cell phones, so why do we think that our pets need them? This device allows you to video chat with your pet from wherever you are at any given time.
Yes, if you want to Downward-Dog with your cat you’re more than welcome too. These yoga classes , which have popped up in California, New York and Iowa, truly push the limits of Lulu Lemon.
We have to wonder why is it that our society has started treating pets more like humans than animals? Our pets will always love us whether we take them to yoga or not. They luckily neglect to see the negative sides of our personalities and that’s what makes them so great.
Yet, we invest so much time and money into our pets, much more than people used to, we can’t help but wonder: is it for the pet or for us?
And what does the future look like? Perhaps our cats will wake up with us in the morning and put on work clothes before grabbing their morning coffee and heading to the office. Do we need to worry about our pets replacing human jobs before the robot take-over? It’s all just a little too much.
