Summer blockbusters have been a time-honored tradition since the 1970s. People credit “Jaws” with the distinction of being the first summer blockbuster and people have been flocking to the theaters every summer since. 2018 is an amazing year for movies and summer is no exception. Here are 15 you need to see before they leave theaters!
Okay, yes. This movie has been hyped to death by now, but honestly, there’s a reason for it! Since it opened on April 27, it’s broken many box office records, including becoming the single largest opening weekend worldwide. We can’t say much because of spoilers, but there’s a reason for the hype. If you haven’t seen it yet, run to the theater with superhuman speed!
Everybody’s favorite “merc with a mouth,” Deadpool, returned to theaters in late May for his highly-anticipated sequel. The film is R-rated and is totally raunchy, so you might want to leave the kids at home for this one.
“Solo: A Star Wars Story” got off to a bit of a rough start, with a projected loss of $50 million. However, it’s being highly praised by critics and fans alike, scoring a 71 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. This “Star Wars” prequel tells the story of how fan-favorite characters Han Solo and Chewbacca cross paths with Lando Calrissian.
Based on an incredible true story, Adrift sailed into theaters June 1 and is enjoying success both from critics and moviegoers alike. It boasts a 70 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, which is pretty good! The film stars Shailene Woodley and Sam Claflin as two sailors who have to survive a hurricane and its aftermath.
This highly anticipated movie has an all-star cast and hit theaters early this June. The movie centers around a group of women attempting to steal jewelry from the Met Gala and it’s selling point to most people is the incredible cast. Rihanna, Anne Hathaway and Sandra Bullock are just some of the names this movie boasts.
There’s no question about it, the number one summer blockbuster on my list is “The Incredibles 2,” which hit theaters on June 15. The wait is finally over! This highly anticipated sequel to the 2004 Pixar classic is sure to be fun for the whole family.
The Jurassic movies date back to 1994, with “Jurassic Park” now being considered a classic. The newer “Jurassic World” movies started in 2017, and “Fallen Kingdom” marks the first sequel in the series. Chris Pratt stars in the film, which will rampage into theaters on June 22.
The prequel to the highly regarded “Purge” from 2013 is finally here. The film will explore how the Purge — the fictional event where all crime is legal — started and like the rest in the series, is set to be politically charged. This is a horror movie, so if you’re sensitive to things like gore, you might want to skip this one. Like others in the series, it’ll hit theaters on the Fourth of July.
This movie is the third Marvel film to make the list, which proves the brand owns this summer. Critics and comic fans alike are looking forward to the sequel to the 2015 film “Ant-Man,” which flies into theaters on July 6. Like many of its cinematic universe counterparts, it’s sure to be an instant classic.
This one is for the whole family! The third installment of the “Hotel Transylvania” series sees the heroes embarking on a cruise ship to get away from the hotel. If you liked the first two, it will be your lucky day when this one slithers into theaters on July 13.
If you’re a fan of Abba or liked the first “Mamma Mia,” which was adapted from the hit Broadway musical, you’ll probably want to check this out. Meryl Streep lends her star power to this film, which features a lot of the original movie cast returning, along with new additions like Cher! The movie will have us all dancing in our seats when hits theaters on July 20.
The 2014 film Unfriended is finally getting a sequel on July 20. It’s based on the very real, very true concept of people spying on you through computer software. If you don’t like horror films or get easily paranoid, this one might not be the best option for you.
If you were a fan of the original 1996 thriller, this sequel should totally be on your radar. With Tom Cruise starring, the movie is sure to deliver! Make sure to spy it when it drops into theaters on July 27.
This highly-anticipated movie will surely warm everybody’s heart this summer. An adult Christopher Robin reunites with Winnie the Pooh and his entire crew. The nostalgia factor alone is going to make this a hit when it premiers near the end of summer on Aug. 3.
An unexpected way to end this totally expected list of summer blockbusters is with a movie based on an internet urban legend. The Slenderman mythos got its start in 2009 on the Something Awful forums and it’s blown up from there. The fictional Slenderman is a tall, pale man with no face and a suit. According to internet legend, he has long tentacles and abducts children. The trailer gives off some serious “Stranger Things” vibes. It’ll crawl into theaters on Aug. 24.
No matter what genre you enjoy, there’s a summer blockbuster for you whether you’re a comic fan, a horror buff or a kid at heart. Everybody is sure to find a movie to enjoy. So grab your tickets, popcorn and your friends to hit the theaters this summer and check out these options.
