Entity explains how to tell the difference between authentic and fake Chanel purses.

A Chanel handbag is equivalent to a fashion holy grail. Beautiful, classic and expensive, these handbags are the epitome of casual glamour. So, when you find a supposed Chanel bag on ebay or in a thrift store, you probably think you’ve lucked out. But don’t be deceived. Knockoff Chanel bags are more common than you’d think. To avoid spending your money on a fake, follow these tips to see if your new gem is authentic or not.

1 CHECK THE HARDWARE.

Inspect the signature CC lock on the front. According to Sabrina’s Closet, an authentic Chanel bag will always have the right C overlapping on the top and the left overlapping the bottom. The CC lock is also always centered. In addition, the letters will have a flat edge finish. Once you’ve approved the lock, check the inside. In a true Chanel bag, you’ll see flathead screws holding it together. There will also be “Chanel” written on the left side of the bag and “Paris” on the right.

2 CHECK THE STITCHING.

Sabrina’s Closet also states that an authentic vintage Chanel will have a minimum of 10 stitches per inch. More modern bags, however, can have more than 10 stitches per inch. Knockoffs are often glued together or sewn superficially. If you’re a stylish woman who is searching for the perfect designer bag, remember to check the bag for any glue residue before making your purchase.

3 CHECK THE LEATHER.

According to Allwomenstalk, the embossed, pebbled caviar texture of the leather is a signature Chanel texture. This pattern is a unique pattern, although many “fake” designers will try to copy the trend. Knockoffs will have repeat patterns in the fake leather, which is meant to imitate the pebbled caviar.

4 CHECK THE QUILTING.

The quilted nature of Chanel bags is the most frequently replicated. If it’s an authentic bag, then it should have consistently quilted diamonds. Look for mistakes in the shape of the quilts.

5 CHECK THE CHAIN STRAP.

Sabrina’s Closet says fake straps are dead giveaways. The stitching on an authentic Chanel strap is seamless and free of bumps. Fake straps often have obvious bumps where they were stitched together. In addition, knockoff Chanel straps show a “double layer” of leather while a real one doesn’t. Lastly, the actual chain on a real Chanel bag is typically heavy.

6 CHECK THE LINING.

The inner lining on authentic Chanel bags will be snug and without bumps.

7 CHECK THE STAMPING.

The color of the inner stamp will match the color of the outer hardware.

8 CHECK FOR AN AUTHENTICITY CARD.

Most unused Chanel bags will have an authenticity card with a serial number inside the bag. These cards are easily replicated, so beware. If the serial number has nine or more digits, then it is a fake bag. The fake card will also be flimsy. A real authenticity card should be as durable as a credit card and the information on the card should be printed straight. Additionally, Chanel bags made from 2005 and beyond feature a grey circular symbol at the top right of the card. Symbols on fake ones will be white.

Happy shopping and don’t let yourself be fooled!
