People are tattooing every part of their body now, including their inner lip.

Although inner lip ink isn’t anything new, they’re definitely increasing in popularity. Many celebrities – including Miley Cyrus and Kesha – have flaunted some pretty cool inner lip tattoos. And for many people, having a tattoo inside your mouth adds to the mystery and allure of creatively concealing a tattoo.

But before you book your appointment to get your own inner lip ink, you should know what you’re getting yourself into.

1 Your inner lip tattoo is temporary.

Unlike tattoos on your skin, inner lip tattoos heal relatively quickly. Because of the mucosal cells that line the inside parts of a person’s mouth, mouth tissue has a tendency to repair itself faster.

Basically, skin that would take about 3 weeks to heal would only take 3 days in the mouth due to the rapid regeneration of mucosal cells. Thus, most inner lip tattoos fade and disappear in about one to five years.

And depending on the the style and size, some inner lip tattoos only last a couple weeks or a few months.

2 So, decide if something temporary is worth your money.

Of course, inner lip tattoo prices will vary from one artist to another. But typically, the starting cost is $50. However, if you pick a more complicated design, you could pay anywhere from $50 to $100.

And since tattoos fade so quickly, many people go back into the shop to get their ink redone. While most artists don’t charge to have their own work retouched the first time around, you’ll have to pay for any subsequent touchups.

If you want to tattoo a word or image on your body that you don’t want to commit to, then getting an inner lip tattoo is a great choice. But if you’re looking for something long-lasting, you may want to reconsider.

3 Inner lip tattoo pain honestly depends on your pain tolerance.

That’s probably not what you wanted to hear, but it’s the truth. Some people have reported that the process is less painful than the other tattoos on their body. Others, however, experienced more pain because of the high concentration of nerves in the lip.

What is painful, however, is getting a tattoo infection.

4 The healing process will require extra care and attention.

Your mouth is filled with bacteria and that alone increases the risk of infection. Thus, you need to make sure to take excellent care of your inner lip in the days following the procedure.

To avoid infection, rinse your mouth with alcohol-free mouthwash after meals and after smoking. You may even want to avoid having intense make out sessions with your partner to avoid transferring even more bacteria into your mouth.

It’s up to you. Really, just make sure to talk to your tattoo artist about specific care instructions.

And once it’s healed… take all the selfies before it starts fading!
