Understand the houses, and you will better understand yourself.
The twelve houses of astrology are the departments that make up life.
Houses differ from elements and zodiac signs because they are not based off of energy. Instead, the houses are where these energies reveal themselves. In other words, planets represent action in the horoscope and the house of the planet is the home of the action in question.
The most important/influential houses are the first, fourth, seventh and tenth houses. Each house is associated with a set of traits, beginning with self and expanding outward into society.
This house relates to self-awareness, your physical body, personality, appearance, personal views on topics, self identity and beginnings. Planets in this house will influence your personality and how others perceive you. The natural ruler of this house is Mars and is ruled by Aries.
This house relates to your values, talents, self-worth and self-esteem. The second house is more about how you value yourself instead of describing your personality from the first house. This house covers everything related to your immediate material and physical environment, as well as your income and money. The natural ruler of this house is Venus and is ruled by Taurus.
The third house rules all communication — talking, thinking, texting and any other source of communication. This house also covers siblings, local travels, early education and community affairs. It is ruled by Gemini.
The fourth house represents the home and everything associated with it, such as family. It represents ancestors and both the home someone grew up in and the one they will move into. This house focuses mostly on the mother and the mother’s side of the family.
The fourth house sits at the very bottom of the wheel and acts as a foundation of all things. This house is ruled by Cancer.
The fifth house refers to the children and creativity. It also includes personal interests, love affairs, drama and teaching, as well as pleasures such as sports and gambling. In short, this house is about you being yourself and enjoying it.
Though romance and sexual relationships are a part of this house, marriage is assigned to the seventh house. In terms of astrological houses, the purpose of marriage is to raise kids and preserve the values of a particular culture. The fifth house ruled by dramatic Leo is all about fun and play.
This house is the sector that rules health and service. It depends on schedules, organization, fitness, diet, natural/healthy living and being of service to others. It includes volunteer labor, civil service work, care-taking and your physical ability to work.
This house is more about the quality of your work as opposed to your actual career, which is represented by the tenth house. This Virgo-ruled house includes personal hygiene and dealing with other everyday things.
This house is considered the house of marriage and other relationships such as business/personal partnerships, contracts, divorce, separation, open enemies and lawsuits. The difference between the fifth house and the seventh house is that the seventh house refers to more permanently-binding relationships.
When a fifth house affair progresses into a more serious relationship, it moves to the seventh house. In other words, a relationship in the fifth house is like butterflies in your stomach and a relationship in the seventh house is marriage. The seventh house is ruled by Libra.
This house is the domain of birth, death, sex, mysteries and bonding at the deepest level. This mysterious house is the polar opposite of the second house. And since the second house rules individual possessions, the eighth house rules what a relationship owns — joint finances.
This house also rules other people’s property and money. It is said to be one of the most misunderstood houses as the things represented by the eighth house seem to have nothing to do with each other. This house not only represents death, taxes, inheritances, bankruptcies and personal sacrifices, but it also represents transformation and healing. This makes sense to astrologists, since transformation and healing requires some type of loss and injury first. The eighth house is ruled by Scorpio.
This house refers to religion, law, long journeys, morals, wisdom, books, spirituality and higher education as opposed to early education represented by the third house. The act of knowing and knowledge belongs to the third house, while the ninth house refers to the act of understanding.
This house includes our experiences from long journeys to contact with other cultures. The ninth house is ruled by Sagittarius.
This house is considered the most public part of the chart. It is the house of honor, status, community power and prestige. It is not about gaining material things as it is in the second house. Instead, this house wants success for the sake of honor and social status. This house focuses on the career that you grow into as opposed to the daily work and random jobs ruled by the sixth house.
The fourth house rules the mother and the tenth house rules the father. Since the fourth house rules the nurturing parent, it is said to rule the mother and since the tenth house rules the success-focused parent, it is ruled by the father. The tenth house is ruled by Capricorn.
The eleventh house rules teams, friendships, networking, hopes and humanitarian interests. It also rules originality, invention, astronomy and other things futuristic. It is a succedent house with its natural sign ruler being Aquarius and its natural planetary ruler being Uranus.
This is also a misunderstood house that refers to our subconscious and hidden self. This includes the unconscious mind, subconscious memory and habits, mental illness, karmic debts, self deception and frustration. The twelfth house includes sacrifice, suicide and self-undoing.
Since the twelfth house is the final house, it rules endings. It covers the final stages of something and the afterlife. It is also associated with separation from society, institutions, hidden agendas and secret enemies. This house, ruled by Pisces, also rules the imagination, creativity, arts, poetry and anything else that deals with the subconscious mind.
