ENTITY reports on make a difference day

Make A Difference Day is on Oct. 28, but how did this national holiday come about?

Well, since 1992, people have come together on this day to improve the lives of others. It started on Feb. 29, 1992, a leap year, where the idea for a national day of service came to fruition.

Since then, the day has been held on the fourth Saturday of every October.

The national holiday is held by Tegna, a broadcast, digital media and marketing service company. Its website claims, “Make A Difference Day shows that anyone, no matter of age or background, can make an impact on their community. Thousands of projects take place every October. Some large, many small. But each effort makes an important difference to our communities.”

So, how can you participate in Make A Difference Day?

Easy! Start a project.

Tegna partnered with Arby’s Foundation and Points of Life to give volunteers the resources to start a project. Using Tegna’s resources, you can start any project to help your community. Also, if you register your project, you will qualify for one of 14 $10,000 grants to help your project.

If you can’t think of a project, Tegna has some suggestions.

1 Arrange a 5K benefit walk.

You can recruit people in your community to participate in a walk that will raise money for people suffering from natural disasters.

2 Organize a food drive.

You can start a drive for people to donate their unused food cans to people at homeless shelters or food banks.

3 Lead a clothing drive.

You can ask people to donate their old clothes to a local homeless shelter. You can also start a drive to donate backpacks and school supplies to children in need.

4 Help those in need.

This is more of a broad topic. Participate in Make A Difference Day by helping out an elderly or disabled person for a day. You can help them run errands, with chores or even clean up their house or yard.

5 Coordinate a recycling event.

This is a great way to convince your community to start recycling. Through any sort of event, you can encourage your community members to be more environmentally conscious by collecting their recyclables.

But, if you can’t start your own project, you can always volunteer.

If you don’t want to start a project, you can find one to join.

If you want to join a project someone else in your community has started, Tegna has the resources for that too. Just go to their website and enter your city, state or zip code into their search engine, and they’ll find a project near you. So, if you’re too busy to plan your own event, you can just volunteer in someone else’s event. Now you really don’t have an excuse to skip Make A Difference Day.

According to Points of Light’s website, Make A Difference Day contributes 250,000 service projects in 30 different countries with 30 million hours of volunteer service a year, equating to a $635 million annual dollar value of volunteer hours.

This national holiday gives people a chance to take a day out of their year to give back to the world. So, if you’re looking for a chance to improve the lives of others, Oct. 28 is your chance.
