Are you a thrill seeker, a nature buff or something in between? If you’re looking for an exciting way to get outdoors, bond with friends and have the adventure of a lifetime, then look no further. White water rafting – whether you’re new to the sport (class I) or a white water junkie (class VI) – is the perfect way to spend quality time with family and friends while enjoying some of the most stunning scenery the United States has to offer.

From the most remote regions of California to the dense forests of the upper northeast, you are sure to find a rafting experience tailored just for you. Check out this list of popular rafting destinations for your next big adventure.

1 Colorado River

If you’re looking for a trip with some spectacular scenery, you’ll definitely want to check out the Colorado River. There are several rafting companies to choose from that offer everything from half-day trips to more strenuous two-week adventures.

Fodor’s recommends that travelers book their rafting trip as soon as possible as many of the excursions book up a year or two in advance. After considering the levels of difficulty, beginners should consider a class I or II trip while more experienced rafters might consider a longer excursion.

For beginner trips, the standard route usually takes rafters through the Hualapai Reservation with stunning views of the western Grand Canyon.

2 Gauley River

For more experienced rafters, the Gauley River is the place to be. West Virginia’s Gauley River offers a 35-mile stretch of harrowing rapids for the most daring adventurers. The rapids rank among the most technically difficult in the country, with the lowest class starting at V.

Less experienced rafters can sign up for a day trip on the Upper New River where they will have the opportunity to swim and spot local wildlife unique to the region. For more information about tours and adventures be sure to check out Gauley River Adventures.

3 Youghiogheny River

The Youghiogheny River or more commonly, The Yough (pronounced Yock), runs through Maryland and Pennsylvania and is one of the most popular rafting destinations in the Northeast. The Huffington Post lists The Yough as one of the top 10 river rafting trips in North America.

With upper, lower and middle class rapids, The Yough has trips for any level of adventure from beginner to professional. Unlike some rapids that depend on certain conditions to produce the best currents, The Yough has regular dam releases that ensure the best rafting experience all summer long.

4 Salmon River

Looking to mix it up? Made up of three sections – Middle Fork, Main Salmon and Lower Salmon – Idaho’s Salmon River is one of the best locations to experience diverse flora and fauna.

“The Salmon River boasts more options for trip length and more diverse scenery and wildlife than any other river in America as it cuts through the middle of the largest contiguous, roadless wilderness in the lower 48 states,” says Wheretraveler.

Just be careful on your adventure – the spot is in the middle of nowhere with few nearby towns.

5 Alsek River

Headed north?  While a bit chillier than the other options, The Alsek river – which also runs through Canada – shouldn’t be overlooked. As you explore the northern waters, you’ll be on a wild adventure (safely) dodging glaciers and icebergs. Plus, you’ll also see tons of nature beyond the raft, including diverse types of animals.

“As well as superb white water, the trip offers you an unforgettable experience of wildlife, from grizzlies and moose to spawning salmon and luscious blueberries,” reports National Geographic.
