Entity explains why you should use social media for jobs.

As Generation Y is constantly being pestered by the Baby Boomers to “put down their phones (or computers)”, it may be time for the boomers to retract that comment and pick up theirs.

The millennial generation tends to be looked at negatively for the amount of time they spend on social media; however it turns out being immersed in this technology isn’t so bad after all. In fact, it may be more beneficial for their futures. Tech Times wrote an article on a study that was conducted by the Journal of Personality and Psychology that found those who take pictures and record events for social media purposes on their phones find themselves enjoying moments more than those who don’t.

Before you think about deleting all those social media accounts and putting down your phone, or closing that laptop, here are a few more reasons you should keep it right there in your hands:

1 Personal Brand

Forbes states social media can increase brand recognition, “Every opportunity you have to syndicate your content and increase your visibility is valuable,” not only for a company but for yourself. Social Media can help you share your interests: photography, videos you create in your spare time, anything you want to show the world. It can help you get started on a business you may not have every thought possible. Many artists who may have once thought they couldn’t sell their work now use social media to showcase their pieces and drive both viewers and buyers, some users even use the sites and apps to promote personal businesses or side jobs.

2 Jobs

Social Media is taking over business, Entrepeneur.com spoke on the quick take over:

Up until now, social media has been optional for businesses. But Charlene Li, one of the world’s leading thinkers on social media and co-founder of the Altimeter Group, a research-based advisory firm in San Mateo, Calif., predicts that companies that do not get on the social media bandwagon soon–within three to five years–will not survive. It’s not an overstatement to say social media is transforming every aspect of business.

While the older generation is attempting to adapt to the new form of technology, Generation Y knows it like the back of their hand. Having background experience can ultimately increase your chances in getting a job. If you are in a position with someone who is older and has more experience, the doesn’t necessarily mean your out of luck. If you know how to navigate the tricky waters of SM you have, if not equal, a better chance at landing that job. (Especially if you have used it for your own personal brand, you can show employers just how good you are at it)

3 Company Benefits

If you’re trying to establish a company or are already on top, social media can always help! Being involved in it is a great way to communicate with your audience. You can see just how many people are interested in your products and how they feel about them. Also beneficial is the trending aspect of social media. Being able to view what is trending can help a company get involved with what their audience is interested in.
SM such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter provide the opportunity for a business to showcase their products on the feeds of all users allowing them to reach audiences who may not know about them.

Ultimately, companies being on social media allows them to evaluate ROI, and the use of it is virtually free.

4 Reputation

Social Media can help you build a reputation. This proves to be helpful to companies who are in the hiring process. Businessnewsdaily.com says the number of companies viewing social media accounts has grown, “Specifically, 60 percent of employers now turn to social networks to research job applicants, up from 52 percent last year and just 11 percent in 2006”, it helps employers and it helps you. You can create a clean reputation and it can help a business in the hiring process. The difference between you and another possible hire could very likely come down to who has a “cleaner” social media account.

5 Personal Life

Social media is great in the workforce, but it’s also great in regards to a personal life. It allows us to keep in touch with those who have moved away or you may not get to see as often. Whether it be family or friends social media is there to catch us up on anything and everything others are up to in their life.

SM holds great benefits for the world of today from careers to a personal life. While you may be consumed in your phone very often, it’s ok to put it down at times, but don’t put it down forever. You never know the opportunities social media could lead you to.
