"Ladies celebrating ladies."
One of the greatest things to come from “Parks and Recreation” is probably Galentine’s Day.
Any “Parks and Rec” fan knows Leslie Knope is the ultimate feminist. Her biggest role models were famous female politicians and she never missed out on an opportunity to compliment her friend, Ann Perkins.
So, it makes sense she created a holiday dedicated to spending time with her closest female friends.
But if you’ve been living under a rock for the past couple of years, we’ll break down what Galentine’s Day is.
Amy Poehler’s character, Leslie Knope, created Galentine’s Day as a way to celebrate her friends. It’s an alternative to Valentine’s Day, where instead of celebrating a relationship with a significant other, she spends it celebrating her friendships. It’s the perfect way to celebrate your other soulmates aka your girlfriends.
She usually holds a brunch the day before Valentine’s day to celebrate the imaginary holiday.
Why is it so awesome? Let’s hear it from Leslie Knope herself:
“Oh, it’s only the best day of the year. Every February 13th, my lady friends and I leave our husbands and our boyfriends at home, and we just come and kick it, breakfast-style. Ladies celebrating ladies. It’s like Lilith Fair, minus the angst. Plus frittatas.”
Here at ENTITY, we’re all about celebrating our fellow women, so here are a few ways you can celebrate your best friends.
You can always go the Leslie Knope route and get waffles and champagne with your closest friends. Brunch always brings friends closer together. Do it for Leslie.
Why go out when you can make waffles at home? If you’re not eating waffles on Galentine’s Day, then you’re not actually celebrating Galentine’s Day.
Plus, this way you and your friends can make all the waffles you want while lounging on your couch in pajamas. (Are you starting to see the waffle theme here?)
You can decorate your house like you would on Valentine’s Day, and invite your closest best friends. This is also perfect for your single lady friends.
And while you’re at it, go the “White Chicks” route and braid each others’ hair.
Every woman deserves a spa day. Grab your gal pals and spend the day treating yourselves to massages and steam rooms. You can even get your nails and hair done.
No girls day out is complete without a trip to the spa. We women work hard and we deserve a day to pamper ourselves.
It can be a painting class, a pottery class, a cooking class or an underwater basket weaving class (look it up, it’s a thing). Either way, you’re spending time together learning something new. Plus, you’ll have something to take home with you to commemorate the special day.
All in all, Leslie Knope created the ultimate holiday for women when she came up with Galentine’s Day, and we thank her for it. Galentine’s Day only comes around once a year on Feb. 17., so don’t miss out on a day dedicated to celebrating friendships and women.
Although, you should honestly just get into the habit of celebrating your female friends every day, but that’s another story.
