ENTITY helps people decide when to volunteer.

Need help deciding when to volunteer? ENTITY has you covered.

We have all had those moments; your baby sister smiles at you after giving her a piece of candy, a grandmother hugs you after you’ve helped her bring her groceries upstairs, or your best friend sends an endearing thank you text after you let her vent to you all night. The feeling you get knowing you made an impact in someone’s life is spectacular. While you may lend a helping hand to your close friends or family, practicing the giving spirit outside of your immediate circle can make all the difference. It’s time to volunteer.

To become a volunteer doesn’t mean you’ll have to travel long distances and go abroad to help those suffering in other countries. There is plenty you can do within your own community to give back, such as spending your Thanksgiving morning feeding the homeless or sorting vegetables at a local food bank. But when exactly is the right time for any form of volunteer work? That all depends on you. If you are eager to aid those in need, take a look at this list of the best times to volunteer.

1 While in high school.

Staring to volunteer in high school can open the door to great opportunities and even give you an edge when applying for college. Many schools have clubs that are dedicated to helping the community, which is the perfect way to get involved and also figure out what it is you want to make a difference in. According to United Way, 5 reasons why all high school students should volunteer are: gaining new skills, adding to the resume, giving time, showing responsibility, and earning credits

2 During the summer.

Summer is known for being a time of relaxation. Dedicate that free time you have to helping those in need! You can find volunteer opportunities that will last the entire summer to keep you busy. This is also a good time to volunteer abroad with a short term program.

3 After a natural disaster.

According to the American Red Cross, “Volunteers make it possible to respond to nearly 70,000 disasters every year.” The outcome of a natural disaster can not be predicted, but when they happen, people effected are often left in dire need of help, which is where you come in. Visit the American Red Cross website to search for disaster volunteer openings near you.

4 Before heading off to college.

Some people decide to take a year off before going to college, which is another great time to get some volunteer experience in. You can commit to an organization for a longer period of time, or spend it at a number of various locations.

5 During a study abroad program.

If you are already planning to go abroad for school, try and find ways you can volunteer while you are away! You will become more immersed in the culture of the country you are visiting and get to meet people from different backgrounds. More purpose will be added to your journey abroad.

6 After graduating from college.

Post graduation, consider taking a few months, or maybe years, to help out those who need it. This can even give you an idea of what you want to do with that degree you just got. You can find a volunteer program through the Peace Corps that is suited to your interests, experience, and time able to be committed.

If you are the type of individual who loves the feeling of making an impact in someone else’s life, volunteering is right for you. Find a time and program that works for you then go out and make a difference!
