Have you ever considered packing your bags and heading to the mountain for a fun-filled week of skiing? If your first thought is a big “Nope,”  it may be time to reconsider. You don’t realize what you’re missing out on! America is filled with gorgeous ski resorts, all within driving distance in over 40 states. Here are four reasons you should plan your ski trip for the next winter.

1 Even if you’ve never skied … you’ll be fine

Veterans skiers are incredibly patient with new skiers. Every skier started somewhere and he or she understands you may be struggling. Just go slow and most importantly, be honest! If you’re with people who are experienced skiers, don’t wait to tell them you’re a beginner.

While it may take a few hours to get used to your skis, pretty soon you’ll be racing down the slopes like a pro.

2 Skiing offers many health benefits.

When is the last time you watched the Winter Olympics? You probably watched countless skiers hurls themselves off a mountain – and made it look easy. Because skiing is a professional sport, you can assume that it required hard work and a great deal of coordination to master.

So try it out yourself! Basically, you’re working out while having fun. Plus, staying outside in the mountain air is refreshing; mountain air is so healthy that Canada actually sells its air to smog-polluted Beijing. This is your chance to take advantage of the bracing, cold air around you – it’s free!

3 If you don t like skiing, there are other winter options.

There are more than a few ways to get from the top of the mountain to the bottom. Besides skiing, you can snowboard, go sledding or just play in the snow. If you just can’t seem to manage your skis or if you’ve had one too many tumbles and need a break, try any of the other snow sports. If all else fails, you can always go up and down the ski lift!

4 It’s the perfect time to bond with your family or friends.

You’ve been stuck in a cubicle all year, which means you are really looking forward to this vacation. Not only can you unwind and gulp in the fresh air but you can also spend time with your family.

If you are all beginners, take lessons together! Laugh at your mistakes and help each other out as you attempt your first slopes.

While skiing may not allow for long and series conversations, the trip offers the chance for you and your family to share your experiences, whether you’re racing down the slopes or building a snowman at the end of the day.

5 If all else fails, there’s always beer.

One of the great perks of ski lodges is that there are other things to do other than just ski. Most locations have great restaurants that are right next to the lifts. That way you can ski right over to the bar when you’re ready to parch your thirst with your fellow skiers.

But make sure you try the sport at least once before giving in and making the bar your home away from home. It’s almost guaranteed you’ll love skiing after a few tries – so give it a shot!
