It’s pretty tricky teaching kids about sustainability. Children lose focus easily, especially when it comes to serious and important issues such as taking care of our environment.

The key to teaching children is to also make it a fun activity. So, here is a list of 10 activities that will teach your child about the importance of sustainability.

1 Playing Educational Games

Surprisingly, there are a lot of educational games about sustainability for children out there. Just like the math and English video games schools teach in classes, games about recycling are just as effective.

For example, Recycle City, Schoolyard Recycling and We Are the Oceans are all games that teach kids how to take better care of our planet without boring them to sleep.

2 Plant Some Trees

Give back to the environment by planting trees. Kids love getting messy and playing in dirt, so put that to good use and show your child the importance and beauty of nature. As they see how long it takes for one tree to grow, they’ll truly realize the impact on our environment when just one tree is cut down to make room for apartments and shopping malls.

3 Make Your Own Art Supplies

There’s not a kid on the planet that doesn’t love a good arts and crafts session.

Why buy paint and brushes when you can make your own? Using just dust mask, dry pigments, a flexible metal spatula, a glass surface, a pipette and water, you can easily make paint with your kids. This will teach them how to reduce their daily plastic waste, plus they’ll have tons of fun playing with the paint afterward!

4 Recycling Game

Recycling isn’t the most fun, but it can be if you make a game out of it.

You can try a reward system where every time your child recycles a bottle correctly, they get an extra 20 minutes of watching T.V. a day. You can also DIY fun and colorful recycling bins with your child, so every time they go to throw something away, they’ll want to use the new bin they made their parent.

5 Reading is FUNdamental

Children’s books are completely vital in teaching kids about important matters. So, instead of reading about “The Giving Tree” for the tenth time this week, try books about sustainability.

“I Can Save the Earth!: One Little Monster Learns to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle” by Alison Inches mixes sci-fi with sustainability to help your little one learn more about recycling. With a plethora of choices, reading to your child won’t ever get too bland.

Use these great techniques to get your child learning about sustainability and help to fight the cause, you never know, you may be raising a future environmental activist.
