ENTITY explains the three-step Instagram theme maker process.

ENTITY has explained how to make an Instagram theme before by using already existing examples of themes and tweaking them. But what if you want to make a theme completely from scratch to ensure that no other Instagram account has the same style as you?  Here are the three steps to ENTITY’s Instagram theme maker process.

1 Come Up With a Niche and Keywords

Whether you’re making an Instagram theme from scratch or using examples, you need to determine your account’s central focus. Without this, there is no way to narrow down the hundreds of different style combinations to fit your specific goals.

A rock band isn’t likely to take pictures in light pastel colors. Similarly, a Instagram account about dogs isn’t going to post dark, somber photos.

So decide what your Instagram account’s niche, or focus, is. Then associate three to five keywords with that niche. You don’t necessarily have to make these keywords general; they should reflect you and your specific personality.

For example, if you want to make a feminist account, but you have a very gritty style, you don’t have to adhere to a stereotypically “girly” theme. (Although there’s nothing wrong with that!) Your keywords could be anything from bold, realistic and gutsy to soft, timid and honest. It simply has to fit your vision of your account.

2 Come Up With a Mood Board

After determining these core elements of your account, find pictures that you feel represent this niche and these keywords. Choose between three to nine photos. You can also make multiple mood boards if you can see your account going in different directions. This will help you decide which style you like best.

Once you’ve put together your mood boards, decide which one best aligns with your goals and interests. Or decide which one that personally appeals to you in aesthetic. After all, it’s your Instagram. What looks best to you is specific to your tastes.

3 Analyze the Photos

After deciding on a specific style, you could come up with new adjectives to describe this style. This could be the same as or different than your keywords. If I wanted to make a dog account that represented sporty, messy and adorable dogs, my style might be bright, summery and joyful.

Then analyze the similarities in the photos. Answer the following questions:

Are there any consistent colors?

Is this a cool or warm theme?

Are the colors faded or bright?

What’s the general level of saturation?

How much exposure (light) are in the photos?

Are the photos grainy?

How is sharpness and clarity?

Are there any other tints or undertones to these photos?

What’s the general level of contrast?

These questions generally cover most of the tools found on any photo editing application. However, if you want to make sure to catch all of the features, go through the adjustable buttons of a photo editing application like VSCO or Snapseed.

Once you’ve answered all these questions, try to find filters that best fit these answers. You can also compare them to your mood board to see if the style works with the “feed.” Then make other adjustments in clarity, tint, color temperature, contrast or any of the other tools mentioned above to get it to your perfect theme.

You can always adjust this theme later. Or you can even change it completely! This Instagram theme maker process is not a one-time only thing. Feel free to explore new styles and themes throughout your Instagram account.

All in all, finding your perfect theme should be fun! So if this Instagram theme maker process stresses you out, take a step back, relax and try to see this as an enjoyable event. Your future unique theme will thank you later.
