Entity reports on the importance of knowing your carbon footprint and how it contributes to global warming.

You probably don’t want to know how your current lifestyle is affecting the environment, but knowing your carbon footprint is important for this world. We have a limited amount of resources, so we have to start conserving as much as we can! If you can change your practices to take part in today’s sustainability trend, now is the time!

Carbon dioxide (CO2) is the main greenhouse gas we emit on a regular basis. Measuring your own carbon footprint allows you to see the specific things you can alter in your lifestyle. Some of these things could include, used electricity, used natural gases, the effects of your car, how much you recycle, what you recycle and how much you waste. Many people think that if they recycle, they are doing their part but in reality, the amount of gas you use to heat your house may be doing more damage than your household waste. By viewing the numbers, you can set higher goals while also visibly seeing your progress.

So, how do you measure your carbon footprint? According to Groundswell, there are many carbon footprint calculators online. Some calculators are more detailed than others, but most of them will accurately determine your annual carbon or greenhouse gas emissions compared to the U.S. annual average, which, according to The Nature Conservancy, is about 27 tons of CO2.

The biggest emitters of CO2  are housing appliances and vehicle use. Unfortunately, buying greener appliances and vehicles is usually more expensive, which isn’t much of an incentive to consumers.

What does motivate consumers, though, are realistic goals. There are multiple online calculators that can help you measure just how much your carbon footprint is affecting the Earth. From there, you can make small steps in accomplishing a more green lifestyle.

If the calculator isn’t specific enough, some research on the issue would provide enough information on what you should do. Figuring out what you need to change is the first step toward making the change!
