Art is art. It doesn’t just mean a pretty picture. Art comes in many forms and isn’t restricted to any one category. Examples of creativity amass. It stems and blossoms from the most unlikely of places.

You can stumble upon art when you least expect it. Libraries have art and music within their books. Museums are more obvious where there’s paintings alongside ancient artifacts. Explore a science lab and marvel at dazzling experiments. Learn a new skill with Adobe Photoshop and get your graphic design skills on. Creativity exists in all places, you just have to open your mind to find them.

Writing as an Art Form

In my youth, I adored reading. My passion for reading lent itself to a curiosity about writing. After I would eat up a chapter book, I would write in my journal. What began shifting my passion away from writing was my inability to categorize it. I began thinking, “What kind of process is writing and how will I make any money doing it?” Money almost always influences examples of creativity.

Visual Art Dominates the Most Common Idea of Art

The notion that visual art was the only worthy form of art discouraged my growth as a writer. My mother used to make beautiful flower arrangements and sell them in order to pay her way through school. Then, there’s my sister who’s a professional paid photographer and my aunt is a sculptor who travels the world leaving her works in various European museums. My partner is a social media influencer that creates short comedic videos as his primary source of income.

The Definition of Being Creative Isn’t Homogenous

Comparing my talents to the talents of others caused me to mischaracterize what it meant to create something through writing. What allowed me to finally accept writing as an art form was reshaping my thinking around creativity. The first hurdle was realizing that being a creative has little to do with art itself. Envisioning what it meant to be creative in the workplace or scientific fields allowed my realization to come full circle. Accepting that devising something purposeful from nothing meant that I was exercising my creativity which allowed me to commit to writing as a career.

Creativity in the Workplace

Creative thinking is a skill that remains in constant modification. Jobs require their employee to demonstrates their creative skills,  whatever that means. Showcasing their creative skill sets has nothing to do with drawing a picture or taking a snapshot of the perfect moment. Instead,  examples of workplace creativity means  solving a budget problem, developing strategies to gain customers or coming up with a theme for a fundraiser.

Creativity in STEM

Those who tend to go  toward the fields of science, technology, engineering and math also exercise their creative thinking processes on a daily basis. Creativity fuels scientific minds in the same way that it does visual or vocal artists. Encountering a problem in a lab and solving that problem means having to exercise creativity. Assembling a robot, devising a workable algorithm or developing a computer program are all ways in which someone utilizes creativity.

Creativity doesn’t only belong to any one world, it dances at the feet of many.
