Entity shares reasons to love feminist Amy Poehler.

Amy Poehler is famous for her comedic timing, her unapologetic feminism and her infectious smile. Whether she is taking care of her two kids or starring in a blockbuster hit, she is an inspiration to women everywhere. Here are just a few of the many reasons to love Amy Poehler.

1 She s a True Feminist

In many ways, Amy Poehler’s name has become synonymous with her fictional counterpart Leslie Knope. Even people who are casually acquainted with Poehler’s wide body of work will recognize her from her comedic portrayal of an ambitious bureaucrat from Indiana.

But there’s an underlying reason why Poehler is often mistaken for Knope. The two women actually have a lot in common, with the one being an almost hyperbolic version of the other. Both women are loud and proud feminists who are not afraid to use their positions to advocate for women’s rights.

Poehler, much like Knope, is not averse to putting her male colleagues in their place when she deems it necessary. In an article written for The Guardian Poehler explains one of the biggest challenges that women face today,  writing, “It takes years as a woman to unlearn what you have been taught to be sorry for … It takes years to find your voice and seize your real estate.”

2 She s Unapologetically Real

A large part of Poehler’s success is due to her unapologetic relatability. Much like fellow female comedians Tina Fey, Melissa McCarthy or Amy Schumer, Poehler knows how to relate to her audience through humor and an honesty that is rarely seen from celebrities in the spotlight.

The comedian has often told interviewers that she will not pretend to be something that she isn’t for the sake of pleasing other people. In an interview with The Guardian Poehler admits that being herself and learning to accept herself is a challenge that need constant work. Poehler admits, “It’s a struggle sometimes, to not apologize for yourself … it’s not easy. I have to really work at it, to not look in the mirror and think, ‘God I hate my face.’”

3 Her Characters are Relatable

Poehler’s relatability in real life often translates to her fictional personas on screen. Through her comedic timing she has mastered the average and the everyday, the people that you see on the bus or in line at the grocery store. Whether she’s playing the overly enthusiastic Knope, or the obnoxious mother to be in Baby Mama, Poehler’s ability to find the humor in the average Jane has earned her a top spot among comedic superstars.

Her characters find themselves in situations that on the one hand are a little ridiculous, but are relatable enough to lend themselves to Poehler’s special brand of humor. In Baby Mama for example, Poehler plays a negligent pregnant women who has agreed to give her baby to a straight laced career woman played by Tina Fey. The relationship between the two women is just weird enough to be funny, but it’s Poehler’s depiction of the negligent mother-to be that begs the audience to ask itself “What would I do in this situation?”
