Poetry is food for the soul, and these five female poets know exactly how to tug on our heartstrings. They capture the unique struggles of modern womanhood in their sweet and succinct works.

Rupi Kaur

As far as modern poets go, Rupi Kaur is nearly impossible to miss. Her first anthology of poems, “Milk and Honey” came out in 2015, and was on the New York Times Best-Seller list for 77 weeks. The Canadian-born poet has become a pop-culture icon, amassing an Instagram following of 3.7 million. Her work has been featured in many publications and the poet herself was profiled by Rolling Stone. Her poems about loss, trauma, love, and feminism are succinct and impactful and offer a touching glimpse into the intricacies of being a woman today.

Nayyirah Waheed

Waheed has published two poetry collections: “Salt” in 2013, and “Nejma” in 2014. Not much is known about her personal life, as she refers to herself as a “quiet poet.” Her minimalistic style is an innovative approach to poetry and it allows her poignant and distinctive voice to shine through. Her poems often deal with subject matter including love and heartbreak, women empowerment, and her perspectives on racial identity. She has been quoted by celebrities such as Meghan Markle and Khloe Kardashian.

Warsan Shire

Warsan Shire published her first poetry collection, “Teaching My Mother How to Give Birth,” in 2011. Not much is known about the Kenyan-born, London-raised poet as a person, but her poetry has captivated many followers online. Her poetry was notably featured on Beyoncé’s “Lemonade” album, and she has garnered the attention of major publications ranging from the New Yorker to the New York Times. Shire’s poetry deals with subject matter ranging from her family history to her experiences as a woman.

Trista Mateer

Trista Mateer has published three poetry collections, including “Honeybee,” “The Dogs I Have Kissed,” and “Redacted.” She has a large following on Instagram with 88.4k followers and often shares new poetry with them. Her newest poetry collection, “Aphrodite Made Me Do It,” is available on Kindle now for just $1.99. Her poems often focus on love, trauma, and of course, female empowerment. “Aphrodite Made Me Do It” is a mix of what she calls, “mythical prose,” feminist poetry, and full-color artwork.

Nikita Gill has amassed a large following on social media, where she often shares her poetry with followers. She is part of the generation of “insta-poets,” and utilizes social media as a tool to disseminate her art. Gill’s poetry is often about healing from loss and trauma, and she is another strong woman poet who advocates for female empowerment through the themes in her poetry. Gill has released four poetry collections including, “Wild Embers,” “Your Soul Is a River,” “Your Heart is The Sea,” and “Fierce Fairytales: Poems and Stories to Stir Your Soul.” Her fifth collection, “Great Goddesses: Life Lessons From Myths and Monsters,” is available now.
