Entity explores the horrors of bed bugs in furniture. Here's how to get rid of bed bugs.

There are certain furniture pieces you shouldn’t buy if you want to “goodnight, sleep tight” without the bed bugs biting. Do you want to get rid of bed bugs? Here are five things to keep in mind when looking for used furniture.

1 Look for Tags and Tear

Most furniture has a tag on it somewhere, even if it’s just from IKEA. Now if it is from IKEA, you’re really better off just buying it new than spending money on it for refurnishing. But if it is something you love, make sure it’s in good condition. According to Savvy Homes, you should check out furniture legs for imperfections and chips, and they should be “heavy and jointed to the wood, not nailed.”

2 Bedbugs

Honestly if it has bed bugs, it’s probably beyond saving. These are almost impossible to get out of furniture. These aren’t just found in beds, they can be found any kind of ‘soft’ furnishings, like couches, suitcases and even clothes.

Look for dark brown and black spots on mattresses or couches. According to bedbugs.net, “Because bed bugs generally feast on the blood of their hosts, creeping out of hiding places at night to latch on, some people think that fecal stains from the insects should at least be tinged with the color of blood. This is not, in fact, the case. Fecal spotting tends to resemble smears or stains, which are dark brown or even black. This is because the blood has been digested and excreted.”

Yes, it is gruesome, but it is necessary to know. Honestly if that furniture piece has bedbugs it’s not worth it.

3 Fleas

Fleas aren’t nocturnal like bed bugs. There’s nothing more embarrassing than having friends over, and everyone just gets attacked by fleas. That’s not fun for anyone. Fleas are still hard to get rid of, but not to the same extent as bed bugs. Maybe get a professional exterminator if you can.

4 Refinishing is a Thing

Sure, maybe you don’t like the color now, but just remember you can always get the piece re-done or refinished. You can buff out a few scratches, or replace a cushion or two. Think of it kind of like someone with a bad haircut but amazing bone structure—the hair is changeable, and you can add makeup sure, but ultimately the actual face isn’t.

5 Cockroaches

Ick. While used furniture won’t have actual live cockroaches, guess what? If the place they’re from has cockroaches, then there’s a good chance the furniture has miniscule roach eggs embedded in the wood. You can get rid of them, but just be aware that they might exist.

There are a few ways to get rid of insects from vintage furniture, and it’s always a good idea to give them a good, solid clean before using them. Just remember, if it does have insects, they’re going to run right out of the furniture. And if you’re doing this inside, they’re going to be in your house. Always clean them up outside!

Ultimately, shopping for furniture is shopping for a work in progress—there’s a reason they’re so cheap. But with a bit of time and money, you might find some truly great pieces.
