Is there a better way to set a trend than with a celebrity as your spokesperson? Better yet, if the celebrity happens to be a pioneer of that very trend? Green living is more than a passing trend, and actor Ed Begley is a living breathing very vocal example of this.

<![CDATA[Ed Begley is an icon in the environmental world. Among the multitude of celebrities who have embraced the green lifestyle, Ed Begley was unquestionably the first.

Last week, Sierra Club Green Home sat down for an exclusive interview held at an environmental event sponsored by Ford Motor Company at its Detroit headquarters.

Begley’s interest in the green lifestyle started back in the 1970s; it stemmed from his desire to live in a cleaner world. He started out with cheap and easy things such as recycling, composting, cooking in a solar oven, collecting rainwater, and biking…. He soon discovered that he was actually saving money doing this, and with his first savings, he bought an electric car. Yes, in the 1970s!

Begley is an outspoken advocate of a sustainable lifestyle. His many years of “living it” and his hit TV series, “Living With Ed,” have prepared him well for our generation’s quest for a greener life.

Here are some of his suggestions and an exclusive interview for Sierra Club Green Home readers:

 • Get an energy audit for your home.
 • Go for the easy inexpensive things first, the “low-hanging fruit.”
 • It is cheaper to go the distance on electricity than on gas.
 • If you have solar panels on your roof, consider a plug-in hybrid or an EV. This way, your car is powered by renewable energy!
