We all know that plants are good for you. We’re always told to eat our vegetables and have an apple a day. But is that the only way to be healthy? When we travel to sunny cities we notice people usually seem happy. Is it just the great weather or is it something in the water? In the Mediterranean, it’s that and more! The Mediterranean diet is one of the most popular in the world for good reason. It is loved by so many because Mediterranean spices are versatile, give so many health benefits, and can add flavor to any dish.

Coming out of Italy, Spain, Greece, France and parts of northern Africa, the Mediterranean diet has been favored by medical professionals for centuries. It’s a good mix of whole grains, fish, fresh produce, olive oil and an occasional glass of red wine. According to my research, these foods increase longevity while reducing risk for heart disease.

Spices add flavoring to many foods, from rice to lamb. However, not all are created equal. Some provide the best value for human health. Out of all the ones utilized in the kitchen the 10 most common are as follows: Saffron, Basil, Parsley, Cilantro, Sage, Rosemary, Oregano, Za’atar, Turmeric, and Thyme.

All of these spices can be enjoyed with anything, whether it be sandwiches, salads, or even meat. What’s going on here? Did we just stumble across buried treasure for our heart and stomach?

Mediterranean spices are valuable as they provide health benefits for a wide range of foods. They are high in flavor and low in calories. Usually, people consume these spices because of their anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. You may have noticed sandwich spots today including these gems in many items. It goes without saying, these spices taste great and make you feel good at the same time.

The benefits between these coastal spices vary. But the main benefits include anti-inflammation, digestive tract improvement, metabolism balance and reduction in cardiovascular disease. Mediterranean spices can also lead to better breath and better sleep. Who wouldn’t want that?

The Universal Point: Why do it?

Overall, we all have a choice when it comes to what we put into our bodies. Sometimes we sacrifice feeling good for tasting good. What if you can have both? In a time when people are staying healthy longer, we have more opportunities than ever to explore different healthy lifestyles. Whether it be vegan delis or the Keto diet, there’s something out there for everyone.

Since 2012, we have put more and more emphasis on reshaping our food system. With the amount of attention going into the sector, we will see a shift in the food industry towards catering to all consumers’ likes. The more we put oregano and rosemary on our grilled salmon, the more businesses will respond, strengthening their wallets and our bodies. It’s a win-win!
Let’s live longer and healthier together. I’m sure your doctor more than approves!
