ENTITY shares five famous figures you didn't know were vegan!

Veganism is a difficult lifestyle choice. The typical definition of the term means that a person doesn’t eat animal products such as meat, cheese or eggs. However, sometimes veganism expands to purchasing choices, with some choosing not to buy anything made from an animal.

The Vegan Society says there are a lot of benefits to going vegan, including improving your health and reducing your environmental impact.

It’s no wonder that vegans are so common, even among our most famous celebrities and historical figures. Some of these famous vegans will surprise you.

1 Benedict Cumberbatch

The award-winning actor, best known for playing Doctor Strange in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Sherlock Holmes on BBC’s “Sherlock,” confirmed in an interview with Time Out London that he’s on a plant-based diet.

When asked if he had to eat certain foods like “egg whites” to stay in shape for “Doctor Strange” he said he didn’t because he doesn’t “eat anything disgusting.”

It was such a big deal that even PETA commended him.

2 Angela Davis

Angela Davis is a historical activist and member of the famous Black Panther group during the civil rights era. She’s also a vegan with a radical message.

In a conversation with Grace Lee Boggs, she said that while she hasn’t spoken about it in the past, she now feelsfree to talk about it.

“I usually don’t mention I’m vegan but that has evolved… I think it’s the right moment to talk about it, because it is part of a revolutionary perspective. How can we not only discover more compassionate relations with human beings but [also] how can we develop compassionate relations with the other creatures with whom we share this planet… and that would mean challenging the whole capitalist industrial form of food production.”

While some just use veganism as a diet, Davis speaks out about how we treat animals in production and how it affects our relationship with corporations.

“[S]entient beings … endure pain and torture as they are transformed into food for profit, food that generates disease in humans whose poverty compels them to rely on McDonald’s and KFC for nourishment,” she said during a 2016 address.

In an interview with Extraordinary Health magazine, “Bones” star Emily Deschanel described her vegan lifestyle.

“I have a very alkaline diet. I love to drink green juices and eat lots of salads,” she said. “As for treats, of course, there’s fruit and you can even get vegan chocolate. For Easter, I buy little chocolate vegan bunnies and give them to everyone.”

She also says she’s raising her children on a mostly vegan diet, although admits that she lets them eat eggs every once in a while.

Her sister Zooey Deschanel also tried a vegan diet, possibly influenced by her sister, but she confirmed with Health.com that her food sensitivities prevented her from doing so.

4 Kate McKinnon

The “Saturday Night Live” star isn’t a well-known vegan, mostly because she doesn’t talk about it a lot. However, there’s some evidence.

An interview with Elle in July 2016 reported that Kate “recently decided to try on veganism—though she’s not sure she wants that last thing printed, ‘just because of the social embarrassment of having to say that I’m a vegan.'”

It’s unclear if she’s still vegan, although a 2017 Coveteur article said that McKinnon’s makeup artist Cassandra Garcia “ended up at [a] stand for vegan croissants” because “Kate… would love a snack.”

5 & 6 Dexter and Coretta Scott King

The wife and the son of Martin Luther King Jr. are vegans! In the October 1995 edition of Vegetarian Times, Dexter Scott King said in an interview, “Veganism has given me a higher level of awareness and spirituality…” and that through his influence, “his mother is a vegan.” These famous vegans know how to fight for human and animal rights.

“If you’re violent to yourself by putting [harmful] things into your body that violate its spirit, it will be difficult not to perpetuate that [violence] onto someone else,” he continued.

However, it’s important to note that the article associates both vegetarianism and veganism with King, so it’s difficult to tell to what extent she took the veganism.

Celebrities, they’re just like us in that they care about what they put into their bodies and about their impact on the environment. Well, a lot of us anyway.
