Happy Bisexual Visibility Day and Bisexual Awareness Week! No matter who you are, it’s important to have a diverse community of people to support you. #BiVisibilityDay hopes to increase the acceptance and awareness of bisexual men and women across the world.

This day is very important for bi folk because as R.J. Aguiar discusses in his video, “There are still so many people in this day and age – gay and straight – who are convinced that [bisexual people] don’t exist.” Some men and women even continue to stigmatize bisexuals as “slutty, greedy, indecisive or predatory.” Others just think that bisexuals are more prone to cheat.

These stigmas about being cheaters and predators are false. But what is true is that bisexual people report higher levels of physical and mental health disparities, sexual and domestic violence and poverty than gays and lesbians. In this video, Aguiar discusses these statistics. He also talks about how although bisexual people make up the greatest single portion of the LGBT population (about 40 percent), less than 0.05 percent of the nearly $500,000 donated for LGBT communities went to bi-specific causes.

But as Aguiar tells his viewers, “We cannot begin to solve these issues until we recognize that they exist.” For more information about bisexual folk, bisexual erasure and anything there is to know, you can watch R.J. Aguiar’s “Ask a Bi Guy” series or websites like BiNet USA.
