Alexis Ohanian was a well-known Internet celebrity even before Serena Williams. Thanks to the acquisition of Reddit, Ohanian quickly became a 23-year-old into a multimillionaire.

And now, it looks like he’s well on his way to starting a family. Since announcing his engagement with Serena Williams on Reddit, the couple has also announced that they’re expecting.

But who is Alexis Ohanian, exactly?

1 He was interested in the Internet from an early age.

He went to high school in Ellicott City, Maryland, but he wasn’t a fan. He admitted to Inc. that he “felt pretty ambivalent about the whole thing.” For him, school just took time away from the Internet.

At that age, he was already creating clans in Quake II and starting a Web design nonprofit. “In school, I was just a kid,” he added. “Online, I had authority.”

2 Aside from Reddit, Alexis Ohanian has been part of various tech ventures.

In 2007, Ohanian launched Breadpig, a social enterprise. Then in 2010, he helped set up Hipmunk, a travel search website. After that, he co-founded the early stage venture capital firm Initialized Capital.

3 Offline, Alexis Ohanian is also a best-selling author.

In 2013, Ohanian published “Without Their Permission: How the 21st Century will Be Made, Not Managed.” In this book, Ohanian discusses how to harness the power of the Internet for good. He even went on a five-month tour to promote the book.

Later, “Without Their Permission” ranked fourth on the Wall Street Journal’s best sellers list for Hardcover Business.

4 Alexis Ohanian is also a political activist especially in matters relating to the web.

“I believe wealth is a means to an end, and wealth has never made me happy, only comfortable. And I want to stay hungry. I really believe my resources are best used to help projects that make the world suck less,” he told Inc.

So when legislators proposed the Stop Online Piracy Act bill, Ohanian took a trip to D.C. There, he and other activists talked to representatives about how the bill would affect user-generated websites. They told their stories, he said. And it worked.
