Jennifer Aniston is speaking out in a powerful new interview about marriage, divorce, career and the years of tabloid attacks she’s endured.

“I’ve worked too hard in this life and this career to be whittled down to a sad, childless human,” Aniston tells Marie Claire.

Aniston, 47, explains why she wrote the op-ed months ago on Huffington Post about the treatment of women in the media.

“My marital status has been shamed; my divorce status was shamed; my lack of a mate had been shamed; my nipples have been shamed,” she says. “It’s like, Why are we only looking at women through this particular lens of picking us apart? Why are we listening to it?

The interview references Aniston’s op-ed, in which she explains that she does not like to “give energy to the business of lies” but she is “fed up” being harassed and objectified by the media despite her success as an actress, producer and director.

“If I am some kind of symbol to some people out there, then clearly I am an example of the lens through which we, as a society, view our mothers, daughters, sisters, wives, female friends and colleagues,” she says.

This lens, she remarks, encourages women to be thin and married with children. For instance, Aniston says that reporters constantly assess her weight to determine if she is pregnant.

“[This] points to the perpetuation of this notion that women are somehow incomplete, unsuccessful, or unhappy if they’re not married with children,” Aniston remarks.

Aniston is not the only woman who believes womanhood does not have to encompass children. Actress Lily Tomlin agrees. “That’s perfectly fine for somebody who wants to. But at that time I didn’t want to — and I’m glad I don’t — have any children,” she tells Metro Weekly.

Several celebrities have come out to support Aniston, including upcoming “Office Christmas Party” costar Jason Bateman, Olivia Wilde and Melissa McCarthy.

Fellow actress McCarthy told Entertainment Tonight she supports Aniston “one hundred thousand billion percent.”

“Everybody needs to stop tearing down women,” she said. “It’s always about the way we look – saying, ‘He’s very interesting,’ ‘He’s a good writer,’ ‘She’s looking older than she was last time we saw her.’ It’s a ridiculous thing. I just hope it gets to the point where it’s embarrassing for people to have such a shallow thought.”
