Director Stanley Kubrick once said, “A film is – or should be – more like music than like fiction. It should be a progression of moods and feelings. The theme, what’s behind the emotion, the meaning, all that comes later.”

This is true for many movie genres today, but is especially accurate for romantic movies. Romantic movies have the power to make us cry from sadness, joy and everything in between. They can also get you to believe in love again, or reaffirm your love of love.

ENTITY is going to give you some of our favorite romantic movies, so you can get back into the feeling of love, continue your feelings of love or just remember that love isn’t as terrible as everyone makes it seem.

1 “When Harry met Sally”

ENTITY reports on romantic movie moments.

Personally, this is one of my favorite romantic comedies of all time. In fact, it’s one of the few movies I actually own.

The premise of the movie is two strangers, who meet through a mutual acquaintance, and carpool to NYC. Throughout a number of years, the two run into each other, and every time they do, one is in a relationship. The problem that occurs here, is that they are secretly in love with each other, and don’t realize it until five years after their infamous road trip.

In the scene above, Harry (the main male character) finally realizes that he is in love with Sally (the main female character). He runs across NYC to proclaim his love for her, and goes into great detail abut all the little things he loves about her. It’s romantic, sweet and very charming — unlike his character throughout the movie.

If you’ve ever been in love, then you can definitely relate to this movie. You will flashback to the moment you realized you were truly in love with your partner, and could not wait to tell them. It will definitely bring on the feels.

2 “The Notebook”

ENTITY reports on romantic movie moments.

“The Notebook” is a romantic classic. You literally cannot write an article about romantic films without including this movie. “A poor yet passionate young man falls in love with a rich young woman, giving her a sense of freedom, but they are soon separated because of their social differences,” writes IMDB.

It’s the classic scenario of boy meets girl, yet they are separated by some external force (usually family or society.) However, what makes this movie so great is the ending. We won’t ruin it for those of you who haven’t watched it, but let’s just say you should DEFINITELY have some tissues handy.

It will have you thinking about your long-term love and what truly matters at the end of the day. And there’s always the added bonus of getting to watch young Ryan Gosling and Amy Adams for a little over an hour.

3 “Titanic”

ENTITY reports on romantic movie moments.

What can we even say about this movie? It goes right along with “The Notebook” as one of the movies you can’t not write about when talking about romantic movies. If you don’t know “Titanic,” honestly I think you may not be human.

Based off of true events, the story follows Rose and Jack. “A 17-year-old aristocrat falls in love with a kind, but poor artist aboard the luxurious, ill-fated R.M.S. Titanic,” reports IMDB. They wind up falling in love, but have to deal with the fatal events that occur when the cruise ship hits an iceberg.

In arguably one of the most devastating cinematic scenes of all time, Jack gives up his life and dies in the freezing water, in order to save Rose. It’s an extremely grand and romantic gesture. Although if we’re being real, there was room enough for both of them on the piece of ship they were floating on, but maybe that’s just my opinion.

4 “10 Things I Hate About You”

ENTITY reports on romantic movie moments.

This is a modern take on a classic play, which pretty much means an automatically great movie. The movie is based on William Shakespeare’s, “The Taming of the Shrew.”

The premise of the movie is that Kat (the main character’s) younger sister, Bianca, desperately wants to go out and date. However, Kat does not. The family rule is that Bianca cannot date until Kat does. Thus, Bianca and the guy who likes her set Kat up with the school’s resident bad boy. Dating him only to please her sister, Kat doesn’t think she will find love. However, she quickly learns that she was wrong.

What we love about this movie is its unique take on Shakespeare’s version. Even though it has a very modern setting, the eloquent love and romance that comes from Shakespeare’s version is still apparent in this modern take.

5 “Love Actually”

ENTITY reports on romantic movie moments.

“Love Actually” follows a number of different characters, whose stories all seem to intertwine and meet by the end of the movie. If you want to read more about this intermingling story, then check out this summary by Fandango. Ultimately all the characters are dealing with either falling in or out of love, to make a long story short.

What’s great about this movie is that at the end, you wind up feeling good about where all of the characters end up. Even though their lives get messy, they seem to intertwine in a way that leaves you with a sense of hope.

At the end of the movie, all the characters are seen at the airport — and they all seem to be doing well, which brings even more light to this complex movie. What’s even better is that for some of the characters, they wind up finding love, actually.

6 “(500) Days of Summer”

ENTITY reports on romantic movie moments.

“(500) Days of Summer” is not your classic romantic movie. However, it still inspires love and is a pretty funny movie. And a movie with Zooey Deschanel and Joseph Gordon-Levitt is always a plus.

“When Tom, a hapless greeting card copywriter and hopeless romantic, is blindsided after his girlfriend Summer dumps him, he shifts back and forth through various periods of their 500 days ‘together’ to try to figure out where things went wrong. His reflections ultimately lead him to finally rediscover his true passions in life,” writes Fox Searchlight.

What’s great about “(500) Days of Summer” is that it’s not convincing you to find love, be in love or any of that. It’s portraying both sides of love — the good and the bad. And at the end, Tom finds love yet again, showing you to never give up on finding “the one.”

Lastly, it displays that it’s okay to reflect on past relationships. It’s almost a taboo in today’s society to look back at past relationships with some sort of good feeling, but “(500) Days of Summer” says it’s okay to have fondness for past lovers.

7 “Sixteen Candles”

ENTITY reports on romantic movie moments.

Oh, if only we could be 16 again. “Sixteen Candles” is the classic story of teenage angst. Sam’s sister is getting married right before her 16th birthday. Her entire family forgets about her birthday — parents, siblings, even her grandparents.

The one thing she wants more than anything is for the most popular boy in school, Jake Ryan, to notice her. However, in true movie fashion, Jake is almost utterly unattainable.

Ultimately, what makes this movie such a classic is that Sam, a normal, regular underclassmen, gets the guy of her dreams, and he makes up for her horrible birthday no less. And can we talk about how hotttt Jake Ryan (seen above) is? He can make up for any missed birthday, anytime. Although the plot is not extremely complex, it’s a feel-good love movie.

8 “The Fault in Our Stars”

ENTITY reports on romantic movie moments.

As if John Green books didn’t gives us feels enough. Based off of one of Green’s many bestsellers, “The Fault in Our Stars” follows Hazel Grace and Gus Waters, two young adults with terminal illnesses.

Despite knowing they don’t have long together, they fall in love anyway — to allow themselves to experience all that life has to offer. The movie doesn’t give you the happy ending that you wished for. However, it has a valuable lesson to teach.

Life is short. We are given only so much time. So if you have someone special in your life, try to enjoy your time with them to the fullest extent. Although it sounds very cliche, love and having someone you care for deeply truly make life worth living.

9 “The Great Gatsby”

ENTITY reports on romantic movie moments.

“The Great Gatsby” is another movie we can slot into our classics category. Based off of the classic novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald, “The Great Gatsby” is an undercover love story.

Gatsby is a mysterious man, who throws lavish parties — yet no one truly knows who he is. This all changes when he meets Nick Carraway, who is related to his long, lost love Daisy Buchanan. She lives across the bay from Gatsby. It’s the classic story of old money versus new money.

What makes this a truly great romantic movie is Gatsby’s undying love for Daisy. After so many years, Gatsby has not forgotten about Daisy and still loves her just the same. And although Daisy is married, she truly loves Gatsby at the end of the day. The love has never died between these two.

It should give us all hope that love, no matter how messy and complicated, can transcend the challenges we face in life. And that if two people are meant to be together, they will find their way back to each other.

10 “Jerry Maguire”

ENTITY reports on romantic movie moments.

This is a great movie pick to watch with your boyfriend. “Jerry Maguire” is the perfect combination of sports and romance.

Jerry Maguire is a sports agent who is all work, no play. His current girlfriend is all work, too — they are ultimately headed nowhere. This all changes when Jerry starts his own company with Dorothy Boyd. Not only do the two work effortlessly well together, but they also fall in love.

What makes this movie stand out is that their love is not sugarcoated. Dorothy is a single mother. Jerry is trying to start his own business after loosing a prominent job. Shit gets hard sometimes, and they even break up for a little while. But at the end of the movie they both realize that they work best when they are together — both in their careers and their love life.

There are a plethora of other romantic movies to watch to reignite the spark in your relationship. A good romantic movie will tug at your heartstrings, get you crying a little, but make you feel hopeful in love and everlasting happiness.
