Happy National Coming Out Day to everyone in the LGBTQ community! Regardless of who you are, it’s important to have a group of people to call family.

Unfortunately, however, despite the growing popularity of queer communities, there is still much work to be done in order to create a culture of acceptance, love and support. Thus, celebrations like National Coming Out Day are important to help foster community and to remind people how powerful the act of “coming out” can be.

“Coming out – whether it is as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer or allied – still matters. When people know someone who is LGBTQ, they are far more likely to support equality under the law,” Human Rights Campaign (HRC) says on their website. “Beyond that, our stories can be powerful to each other.”

For those of you looking for a little inspiration and support today, watch HRC’s video above and listen to some of your favorite celebrities like Amandla Stenberg, Holland Taylor, Raven-Symoné, Elena Delle Donne, Trey Pearson and Nyle DiMarco share their personal stories of growth and love. And as “Grey’s Anatomy” star Sara Ramirez shared last weekend, it’s important to invest in our youth to encourage them to “own their own complex narratives.”

Today is a day of acceptance and pride. What are you proud of? Comment below or tweet us at @entity_mag. For more information about the history of National Coming Out Day, visit HRC’s website.
